BG3 Halfling Handbook

Introduction

Halflings are an iconic DnD race. In Baldur’s Gate 3, their most defining trait is Halfling Luck, which lets you reroll natural 1s on d20 rolls, giving you great insurance against natural 1’s.

Halfling Traits

  • Base Racial Speed: You can move 7.5 m / 25 ft per turn.: Slower than medium races. If it’s a problem, cast Longstrider.
  • Size: Small: Being small makes you more vulnerable to being Shoved and less able to shove enemies, making Strength-based builds less effective.
  • Halfling Luck: Unlike the tabletop rules, natural 1’s affect skill checks in Baldur’s Gate 3, which makes Halfling Luck excellent insurance. I’ve had a frustrating number of Sleight of Hand checks to pick pockets fail on a natural 1 despite having Advantage and a modifier high enough to succeed on a 1. This dramatically reduces that risk.
  • Brave: Fear effects aren’t especially common, but they are very frustrating.

In addition, you must select a subrace which grants additional traits.

Lightfoot Halfling Traits

  • Naturally Stealthy: Stealth in BG3 is almost entirely about cover, line of sight, and staying concealed in unlit areas. Advantage on Stealth checks seems helpful, but being good at stealth is more about understanding the game’s mechanics than building your character.

Stronghear Halfling Traits

  • Strongheart Resilience: Consistently useful through the whole game.

Classes

Barbarian

Strongheart Resilience is great for melee characters, but Lucky won’t be especially useful. Using Reckless Attack gives you Advantage on attacks, and Halfling Luck can reroll natural 1’s on those 2 d20s rolled, but you’ll hardly notice a difference. Being small also makes it hard to Shove and to use enemies as improvised weapons (which is mostly used to carry them around drop them somewhere convenient).

Bard

A Halfling Bard is a great choice for your Tav. Lots of skills, good Charisma for social situations, and Halfling Luck prevents poor roles from causing you to fail a check that you’re nearly guaranteed to pass.

Cleric

No unique synergy here.

Druid

No unique synergy here.

Fighter

Halfling Luck is nice with the unusually large number of attacks that Fighters can make. Strongheart Resilience is also helpful for melee builds.

Monk

Halfling Luck is nice with the unusually large number of attacks that Monks can make. Strongheart Resilience is also helpful for melee builds.

Paladin

Paladin’s Charisma-based skill options are good, which makes them a good choice for your Tav. Halfling Luck provides insurance against bad rolls, and Strongheart Resilience adds even more to the Paladin’s already excellent durability. But remember that being small makes shoving hard, so Dwarf may be more appealing.

Ranger

No unique synergy here. Rangers don’t quite have the skills of a Rogue, nor do they have the huge number of attacks of a Fighter.

Rogue

Naturally Stealthy looks like an obvious choice for the Rogue, but you will get more out of Stealth by spending the time to master how lighting and line of sight work. Strongheart Halfling is likely better even for the Rogue.

You’re more likely to benefit from Halfling Luck while using skills. Expertise in Sleight of Hand, Guidance, and Advantage from any source will make your pickpocketing almost unstoppable unless you roll a natural 1 on the check, which is bound to happen when you’re running around pickpocketing all of Baldur’s Gate. Halfling Luck dramatically reduces that probability.

Sorcerer

No unique synergy here.

Warlock

Halfling Luck applies to your Eldritch Blast attack rolls, but that’s the biggest advantage.

Wizard

No unique synergy here.
