I recently did a whole bunch of reading about 5e’s temperature and weather mechanics to prepare for an upcoming episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, and what I found was basically unusable. I spent a bit of time looking at PF2’s rules, which are slightly better, but even those weren’t a great solution. So I went down a weird rabbit hole, read some charts from the National Weather Service, and ended up with some improved rules for handling temperature and weather.
If you’re planning a game where temperature extremes are a possibility (Rime of the Frostmaiden, or possibly something in a desert), I think you’ll find these rules to be detailed enough to feel like weather really matters but also intuitive enough that you can work from memory once you’ve read the rules once or twice.
I really like the weather rules youve come up with and will definitely be trying them out at my table. For the record though, i live in a place with 100 or more degree swings in temp. Minnesota doesnt experience temp swings that large very often, and only in the winter really, but it does happen. Also deserts pretty regularly get down to near freezing at night and into the hundreds during the day (only 70ish degrees i know, but pretty serious still)
