Originally published as a subrace of the Gith in Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes, the Githzerai was updated in Monsters of the Multiverse as party of WotC’s move away from the idea of subraces. If you are using the previous version of the Gith, see our Gith Handbook.
The changes to the Githzerai were less significant than those made to the Githyanki. The updated innate spellcasting rules mean that Shield is suddenly an option for everyone even if you don’t want to play yet another variant human, making it an easy addition for spellcasters with durability challenges. The Githyanki’s traits are primarily defensive in nature, which is a nice complement to the defensive weak points of many classes.
