I don’t see why you couldn’t make a decent Loxodon Ranger using the original rules. Pick up Druidic Warrior for shillelagh and either magic stone or thorn whip, then you can really lean into Wisdom and the rangers (albeit limited) spellcasting with a reliable spell attack/save DC. Hell, since you have natural armor proccing off of Con, it’s maybe even less MAD than other DW rangers since you don’t need Dex to fill out medium armor.
Shoot, you’re absolutely right. I’m not sure how I overlooked that. And you’re absolutely right about it being less MAD: thanks to natural armor you can go all Con/Wis and still hit 17 AC (19 with a shield).
