Cantrips becoming unlimited in DnD was a solution to a much larger problem. Unlimited Cantrips create their own problems, of course, but I think it’s still an improvement.

Now, this is an actually interesting
0:01
opinion. This user is saying that they
0:04
don't like that cantrips are unlimited
0:06
use in fifth edition because prior to
0:08
fourth edition, cantrips worked with
0:10
spell slots like you had a limited
0:12
number of cantrips per day that you
0:14
could prepare and cast and they were not
0:16
unlimited use. They introduced the idea
0:18
of at will cantrips in fourth edition
0:20
when we had at will powers and
0:22
counterpowers and daily powers. So like
0:24
fighters would have a couple of
0:25
maneuvers that they could use at will
0:27
and then wizards and sorcerers and
0:30
clerics and them had cantrips that they
0:32
could use at will
0:35
and that came over into fifth edition.
0:38
Having played 35, PF1, fourth edition,
0:41
PF2 and 5e, like I I've played a lot of
0:44
editions of the games over the years. Um
0:47
personally I do really like the Atwill
0:49
cantrips. I think they answer her a big
0:52
problem with limited spellcasters. One
0:54
of the biggest problems that
0:55
spellcasters have had all the way since
0:57
third edition at least is the fiveminute
1:00
adventuring day where you'd walk into an
1:02
encounter, these spellcasters would burn
1:04
through their highest level spell slots
1:06
and then everyone would need to go home
1:07
and take a long rest because the
1:09
spellcasters were functionally useless
1:11
without their big spells. Cantrips give
1:13
them a way to be more sustainable
1:15
throughout the adventuring day without
1:17
having to build themselves to also use
1:19
weapons, which very explicitly most
1:22
spellcasters are garbage at. At low
1:25
levels, a wizard in 5e can be decent
1:28
with a crossbow. And um in the 2014
1:30
rules, using a crossbow could actually
1:32
be more damaging than a cantrip until
1:34
they improved at level five. But beyond
1:38
that, like carrying a crossbow, carrying
1:40
a weapon really isn't going to do
1:41
anything except get you killed. So
1:44
giving spellcasters unlimited use
1:46
cantrips gave them something that feels
1:49
core to their class that still feels on
1:51
theme, but that isn't greatly outshining
1:55
what people can do with weapons. Now,
1:57
there is absolutely room to argue that
1:59
cantrips do too much damage and they
2:01
should scale that back a little bit to
2:03
keep them from being as good as weapons.
2:06
And honestly, I do think that would be a
2:07
good idea, but that isn't the game we
2:10
have.
