The DnD Rogue can be very simple to build and play, but they have lots of fun things to do. Focus on Dexterity, then pick skills that work well for your party and use Expertise to be the best at them. In combat, you should always roll at least 2 d20’s to attack each turn.

The D and D rogue is one of the simplest
0:02
characters to build. The core of the
0:04
class is fairly simple to understand.
0:05
And while they do have a lot of buttons
0:07
to push and they interact with the game
0:08
in a lot of ways, understanding and
0:11
playing and building the core of the
0:12
class is pretty simple. Like most
0:15
characters, you're going to start from
0:16
your ability scores. Focus on dexterity
0:18
first. Dump strength. Raise constitution
0:20
as much as you feel like you need. I
0:22
generally consider 14 a safe spot. And
0:25
then depending on your choice of
0:26
subclass, intelligence, wisdom, or
0:28
charisma. For subasses like the thief,
0:31
it really doesn't matter. So you can
0:32
pick whichever one suits the skills that
0:34
you want to focus on. For arcane
0:36
trickster, you need intelligence. For
0:38
some of the subasses, especially a
0:40
couple of the 2014 ones, you might need
0:42
high wisdom. If you don't know what to
0:43
pick, go for wisdom to boost your wisdom
0:45
saves and to boost your perception
0:47
skills. Very important. As a rogue,
0:49
you'll get expertise in a few skills,
0:51
which lets you be really, really good at
0:53
a couple of things. If your party needs
0:54
you to be sneaky, focus on stealth,
0:57
slight of hand, and perception. If you
0:59
are going to be your party's face, you
1:01
want a little bit of charisma, and then
1:02
you can put expertise into persuasion,
1:05
deception, intimidation, maybe insight,
1:07
whatever you think will work best for
1:08
your character. Your tactics are
1:10
generally pretty simple. Most of your
1:12
damage is coming from sneak attack. So,
1:14
it's really important that you manage to
1:16
deliver sneak attack on your turn. And
1:18
the best way to ensure that you do that
1:20
is to make two attack rolls. Like you
1:22
always want to be rolling at least two
1:24
d20s when you attack. So you can get
1:27
that either by getting advantage or by
1:29
using two weapon fighting and just
1:30
attacking with two weapons. If you're
1:32
using two weapon fighting, you want to
1:34
go for a vex weapon like a shortsword
1:36
and then a nick weapon like a dagger so
1:38
that you can make those two attacks all
1:40
during your action and still leave your
1:42
bonus action for cunning action when you
1:44
get it at level two. I'm saying action a
1:46
lot. You're going to get used to it. If
1:48
you're fighting at range, a weapon like
1:50
a short bow is a great choice because of
1:52
the Vex mastery. But honestly, you don't
1:54
really need Vex because you're going to
1:56
be hiding with cunning action basically
1:58
every round. So instead, consider
2:00
something with a different weapon
2:01
mastery, like a crossbow for the push
2:03
mastery. In general, your tactics in
2:06
combat stay fairly simple for most of
2:09
your career unless you go for like
2:10
arcane trickster and you have to mix in
2:12
spellcasting, but it's going to be a lot
2:14
of like look for an opportunity to sneak
2:16
attack, deliver, sneak attack, move to
2:18
safety. Uncanny dodge adds some
2:20
durability eventually, but you are not
2:23
nearly as durable as a fighter. So, you
2:25
really need to avoid taking those big
2:27
hits as much as you possibly can. But
2:29
look for opportunities to deal a ton of
2:31
damage to vulnerable targets. Look for
2:33
opportunities to eliminate major threats
2:36
in combat, and you'll do really well
2:38
both inside and out of combat.
