DnD’s spellcasting-focused gishes do get Extra Attack at level 5 or 6, but they’re (usually) not as good with weapons as strict martials.

extra attack and spellcasting. This is
0:03
an interesting balance point between
0:04
classes that are full spellcasters and
0:06
classes that are fully marshall and that
0:09
kind of spectrum in between those two
0:11
end points. Armor Frog here is pointing
0:13
out that a lot of spellcasters that end
0:15
up getting extra attacks, such as the
0:16
blades wizard, get it right at level
0:18
five or sometimes at level six,
0:20
depending on when they get subclass
0:21
features. But marshall characters that
0:23
get spellcasting, such as the Eldrich
0:26
Knight Fighter, the Arcane Trickster
0:27
Rogue, and arguably the Paladin and
0:29
Artificer, don't get spellcasting at the
0:31
same rate that full spellcasters do. So,
0:34
it feels like in a lot of ways
0:36
spellcasters are getting the cool thing
0:38
that only marshals are supposed to have,
0:40
like at the same rate that they do, but
0:42
marshals are getting the thing that
0:44
spellcasters are supposed to have much
0:46
slower, which feels unfair to some
0:48
degree. Yes, it is unfair. D and D has
0:51
always heavily favored spellcasters over
0:53
marshall characters. Certainly, at least
0:54
for as long as I've been playing, 3 was
0:57
nuts. But at the same time, spellcasters
0:59
just aren't as good at using extra
1:02
attack as marshall characters are. The
1:04
blades gets extra attack, and one of
1:07
those attacks can be replaced by a
1:08
cantrip. So, like that's that's arguably
1:10
better than what a marshall character
1:12
can do at level five. Sure, the two bard
1:14
subasses that get extra attack have very
1:17
little that benefits extra attack. So
1:20
yes, they get it. Yes, they can swing a
1:22
weapon, but a fighter at the same level
1:24
is going to be much more effective with
1:26
their weapon attacks. So there's still a
1:29
gap in effectiveness with using weapons,
1:31
even when spellcasters do get extra
1:34
attack. And at the same time, those
1:36
marshall characters that get spell
1:38
casting get it at a reduced rate
1:40
compared to full spellcasters because
1:43
they're supposed to be relying primarily
1:45
on their weapon attacks. and the spell
1:47
casting is a complement to their core
1:49
feature set. So comparing the two is
1:51
very interesting. It does feel very odd
1:53
sometimes and seeing extra attack on a
1:55
full spellcaster is always like, yeah,
1:58
okay, they already have all the nice
2:00
things. Why do they get my nice thing,
2:01
too, but I don't actually think it's
2:04
that much of an issue. Watsi has mostly
2:07
done a good job of balancing the two
2:10
needs there. There's obviously all kinds
2:12
of problems as soon as you introduce
2:14
specific spells, but for the most part,
2:16
the concept as a whole isn't a
