Final word on AOE rules in #dnd 5e. I hope we all learned something things. 5e’s multiple choice answer to how to handle areas of effect supports a lot of play styles, but also leads to a lot of weird discussions between people who are using diffeeent methods. #dnd5e #ttrpg #characteroptimization #dungeonsanddragons #dmadvice

in my previous videos I spent a lot of
0:02
time talking about areas of effect in
0:04
D&D how they're placed how they interact
0:06
with rules and you know which methods
0:09
interact with them differently between
0:10
theater of the mind miniatures and
0:12
miniatures with a grid so I talked a bit
0:16
about snapping to the grid and why that
0:18
matters if you're using a grid and how
0:20
you can use the choice to snap to the
0:23
grid or not snap to the grid to your
0:26
advantage in various situations
0:28
generally I prefer to snap to the grid
0:30
because it is the most consistent it
0:32
requires the least amount of debate
0:34
between the players and the DM and it's
0:36
the most eminently fair like it always
0:38
works the same way you always know
0:40
exactly what you're getting and no one's
0:42
going to do anything like what if I turn
0:44
this cube 45° and tried to get the
0:46
corners into those extra spaces does
0:48
that get me anything generally no but
0:51
you never have to have those discussions
0:53
you never have to go and do geometry
0:56
because the spaces always line up pretty
0:59
neatly circles can get a little
1:00
complicated unless you're using the
1:02
token method described in Zamanthar's
1:04
Guide to Everything that just turns them
1:05
into squares but even then like
1:09
creatures catching just barely the edge
1:11
of those circles is going to be a pretty
1:13
rare occurrence so snapping to the grid
1:15
using a template if you prefer those
1:17
things generally work pretty well for a
1:19
lot of groups but I still do prefer the
1:23
token method it's pretty close to what
1:25
you're going to see in a VTT as well
1:27
because they'll try and calculate the
1:29
areas of effect for you but this isn't a
1:33
one-size all situation dnd has rules for
1:37
supporting different methods of play
1:38
because people have different
1:39
preferences and different needs groups
1:41
that are really really comfortable doing
1:43
math and quickly assessing like how much
1:45
of this cube is filled by this circle
1:48
those groups might do really really well
1:49
with templates but if you're doing
1:51
things quickly you don't want to have to
1:53
do math at the table you might prefer
1:55
the token method or you might just go
1:56
for theater of the mind and kind of wing
1:58
it or you might use that table from the
2:00
2014 Dungeon Masters Guide so there
2:03
really isn't a a correct way to do areas
2:07
of effect in D and D there isn't one
2:10
sanctioned answer there are some methods
2:12
that are specifically described like I
2:15
said method one method two method three
2:17
that's theater of the mind miniatures on
2:19
a grid miniatures without a grid and
2:21
like those methods work very well within
2:24
the text of the rules but even within
2:26
that there's recommendations for
2:28
handling things slightly differently the
2:31
the only baseline expectations are if
2:34
you are playing on a grid your origin
2:36
point for areas of effect is always a
2:38
grid intersection and from there there's
2:40
very little that's very strictly
2:42
enforced so there isn't necessarily a
2:45
right answer find what works for your
2:48
group and if none of the answers work
2:50
for you then figure out something
