This is the second episode in our 4-party charity stream game, which originally ran in October, 2025, to raise money for cancer research at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
While it's too late to affect the game, it's not too late do donate to life-saving cancer research: https://mdanderson.donordrive.com/participants/9351

Welcome to this very special RBGBOT.
0:02
Charity live stream. If you are with us
0:04
live, welcome. We love you. Uh if you're
0:08
listening to this on the RBG podcast uh
0:10
feed, uh go ahead and strap in. Uh we
0:13
ran previously a 6-hour charity live
0:16
stream where we are raising money for MD
0:18
and Anderson Cancer Research Center. Uh
0:20
if you are listening to this in podcast
0:22
stream, you can check the show notes.
0:23
You can still click a link. You can
0:24
still donate to cancer research and we'd
0:26
really appreciate it. Uh, of course you
0:28
won't be able to change the outcome of
0:29
the game today, but you'll be impacting
0:30
lives and we appreciate it. Uh, we're
0:32
raising money to support MD Anderson
0:34
Cancer Research. Um, one of one of our
0:38
good friends is is fighting cancer with
0:39
MD Anderson right now and so this is
0:42
really important to us. Um, yeah, so we
0:46
appreciate you here being with us today.
0:48
Uh, Tyler, I'm going to put you on the
0:50
spot. Do you want to tell folks how they
0:52
can impact the game today by making
0:54
donations to MD Anderson? Uh Randall, I
0:57
would be absolutely happy to. Okay, so
1:00
we have set up some wonderful donor
1:03
incentives for folks donating to the
1:05
stream. Um if you go to
1:07
rpgbot.net/spooktober.
1:10
I'm I realize I'm tracking that
1:11
backwards. Bear with me. So the text is
1:14
on the screen, rpgbot.net/spooktober,
1:16
that will take you to the donation page.
1:19
Uh on the page, you'll click the big
1:22
shiny red donate button, and it will
1:24
offer you your choice of four
1:26
incentives. So, uh you can donate to
1:29
restore some resource points to the
1:31
characters, which is effectively healing
1:32
us partway through the game. Uh you can
1:35
choose to create a GM intrusion, which
1:37
is where Randall inserts
1:40
something probably unpleasant into the
1:43
story for us. Uh, you can donate a lucky
1:46
charm, which Randall will give us a
1:48
cipher, which is a single use
1:50
effectively magic item, like a think of
1:53
it like a potion if you're coming from
1:54
DND. And if you're crazy and donate
1:57
$100, you can heal uh Ash and I for 1d6
2:01
on all of our resource pools, which is
2:03
just an absolute ton of healings. So,
2:06
somebody wants to come in clutch late in
2:08
the stream when we were in bad shape,
2:10
that would be great for us. We also
2:12
considered adding a adding a tier four
2:14
player intrusions which are similar to
2:17
GM intrusions, but we couldn't decide on
2:18
a price.
2:21
>> Yeah, I think what we're going to do
2:22
there is we'll look for uh kind of total
2:25
donation rates. So, anything that you
2:27
contribute helps us get closer to those
2:28
big picture goals. Uh, and so every time
2:31
we hit one of these major milestones,
2:32
we'll we'll call it out and we'll allow
2:34
a player
2:35
>> I do think it's funny how uh the player
2:38
intrusion is going to be harder to
2:40
achieve than the GM intrusion. I see how
2:43
it is.
2:43
>> Yeah,
2:46
>> I'm very happy about this.
2:48
>> Um, all right. Okay. So, uh, we're going
2:52
to be playing today Old Gods of
2:54
Appalach. Um this is uh it's you know a
2:58
little diddy that I put together uh to
3:01
get ready for that. So get welcome for
3:02
folks who aren't familiar with Old Gods
3:03
of Appalachia. It is a cipher system
3:05
game. There's a very popular podcast
3:07
which is kind of a storytelling podcast.
3:09
It is set in an alternate Appalachia. Um
3:13
we're going to be in the the mid 1800s
3:15
or so during our session today uh in uh
3:19
a little town called Williams Holler.
3:22
And with that, I think we can go ahead
3:24
and get into it. What do you say?
3:26
>> Let's do it. Let's do it.
3:28
>> All right. Um, so our our characters
3:33
arrive on the rail early early Sunday
3:37
morning to Williams Holler. Uh, Ash, why
3:41
don't you tell folks a little bit about
3:43
your character and how you found
3:44
yourself coming to Williams Holler?
3:47
So, my character's name is Jesse Miller,
3:51
and uh she's uh she's originally from
3:54
Texas, and uh she's been kind of what
3:58
people would call a prison rat. Um ever
4:02
since she was ever since she was little,
4:04
she's been blaming for things that
4:06
probably aren't her fault, I think.
4:09
Maybe. Um, so, uh, when I was a kid, my
4:14
my parents' house got burned down and,
4:16
uh, my my mommy and my papy died, but,
4:20
um, everybody blamed me for the fire. I
4:23
don't think I caused it. I don't
4:25
remember what happened that night, but I
4:27
don't think it was me. Um, anyway, uh, I
4:31
was, uh, persona nongrada, and the only
4:34
person to take me in was my uncle Joey,
4:36
who taught me the art of moonshining.
4:38
And since then, I've I've been getting
4:41
in and out of trouble. My uh my my uncle
4:45
got hung recently. And uh since then,
4:49
the people who have been taking care of
4:50
me been the state because I've been,
4:52
like I said, out of prison. This most
4:54
recent one, I definitely didn't commit
4:56
this crime, whatever it was they were
4:59
accusing me of. And uh they shipped me
5:01
out to this hell hole in the middle of
5:03
nowhere, I guess.
5:07
>> Yep. Yeah. Not you're you're not you're
5:09
not quite a uh
5:12
um you're not quite prison labor, but
5:14
you're like you're one rung above it is
5:15
what
5:16
>> And uh to describe Jesse, she has um she
5:21
has blonde hair that she's braided over
5:23
her shoulder. Uh sort of a cowboy hat,
5:27
really ratty. Um and just basic ass
5:30
clothing and leather boots, which she's
5:33
extremely proud of. like that. You can
5:36
take anything you want from me, but not
5:37
my boots. My uncle Joey gave me these
5:40
boots, and they're great. They don't fit
5:42
quite right, but that's all right.
5:45
>> I feel like there's a country song about
5:46
that.
5:48
>> There's probably
5:48
>> You can take my heart, but you can't
5:50
take my boots.
5:57
>> These boots are not made for walking.
5:58
Yes, you're right, Josh.
6:01
>> I'm getting cankers on my heels. All
6:04
right, Tyler. Uh, tell us a little bit
6:06
about your character and how they came
6:07
to Williams.
6:09
>> All right. Uh, my character's name is
6:11
Isaiah Wells. He is a beat reporter from
6:14
this the great city of New York. Uh,
6:18
very very diligent, a bit pushy, a bit
6:21
confident, uh, can get in anywhere, can
6:24
get any piece of information out of
6:25
anybody. Uh but he probably asked a few
6:29
too many questions at one point and was
6:32
um in no uncertain terms volunttoled to
6:36
uh get out of town. Um Isaiah was handed
6:39
a one-way train ticket uh and packed all
6:43
of his belongings in a bag, jumped on a
6:46
train to a town the name of which he
6:48
doesn't actually remember at the moment.
6:51
has just gotten off a train to what is
6:54
certain to be his new life in wherever
6:56
we are.
6:58
>> Yeah. What's this town called again?
7:00
Warhorse town.
7:02
>> Yeah. Williams Holler in Eastern
7:04
Kentucky.
7:05
>> Is that a real town or did you make it
7:07
up?
7:07
>> I made it up. I hope I hope I made it
7:09
up. I'm going to laugh. Somebody's going
7:10
to go be like, "William Holler?"
7:11
>> No, there there are several times where
7:13
I've I've made something up and then uh
7:16
my players will point out that's a real
7:18
thing, bud. I'm like, "What?" So, you
7:20
you guys know, quick tangent, you know,
7:22
Cypress Hollow, my V vampire town.
7:24
Originally, it was called New Rochelle.
7:26
Uh, and uh, until somebody pointed out,
7:30
you know, that's a town in upstate New
7:31
York, right, bud? I was like, you're
7:33
joking. No, that's a real I'm like, god
7:37
damn it, I have to change it now. I
7:40
don't think Cypress Hollow is a real
7:42
town. It might be, but nobody cares
7:44
about it.
7:46
>> Yeah. and and then it's getting caught
7:48
on chat. So, this isn't Williams Hollow.
7:50
This is Williams Holler. For folks who
7:51
don't know, a holler is the valley
7:53
between two mountains. Uh
7:56
>> okay.
7:59
>> Yeah. Uh so, so you get into these
8:01
areas. People talk about being down in
8:03
the holler. Down in the holler means
8:04
literally I've got two mountains, one on
8:06
each side. I'm I'm living down in the
8:07
valley. Um a lot of times the easiest
8:09
place to to build something,
8:11
>> right? So, walk through the valley of
8:15
the shadow. Sorry.
8:18
>> No, you're good. You're good. Okay. The
8:19
first view of Williams Holler uh is of
8:22
the rail station. You you come around
8:23
the bin to see a creek running through
8:25
the bottom of the small mountain town.
8:28
The early early morning sunshine peaks
8:30
over the mountain you're riding along.
8:32
Uh but in the shadow, you'd see the
8:33
gaping mall of the mine. It's Sunday, so
8:37
you're not surprised to see the mine
8:38
abandoned. Out the other window on
8:40
Yonder Mountain, you see a beautiful
8:42
apple orchard of flowers and pinks and
8:44
whites blooming, illuminated by the sun.
8:47
As you step off the train, you notice
8:49
men hurtingly hurtingly attaching what
8:51
you assume is a line of train cars
8:53
filled with cold line you just arrived
8:55
on. Some empty cars were led down an
8:57
alternate line in the yard. And you're
8:59
greeted by a man in overalls with a
9:00
five-pointed star badge pinned to the
9:02
overalls. He's wide with muscle. You
9:05
can't help but notice his arms are
9:06
likely bigger round than your head. He
9:08
might be the largest man you've ever
9:10
seen, but when he takes each of your
9:12
hands in turn to greet you, his grip is
9:14
firm yet gentle.
9:19
>> He puts his hand on me.
9:22
>> Hey, Reges out. Shake your hand. You
9:24
don't have to take it.
9:24
>> Oh, okay.
9:26
>> I look at it and look at him. Do I Do I
9:29
still have handcuffs on?
9:30
>> No.
9:31
>> Okay.
9:34
Well, how do you do, I guess?
9:38
Well, you you two must be my
9:40
troublemakers, ain't you? My name's
9:42
Oats.
9:44
>> They call you something more than notes.
9:46
Is that just a nickname? Your mom mama
9:48
wasn't very creative, was she?
9:50
>> No. No. No. She weren't. But she sure
9:53
loved the Bible.
9:55
>> Who doesn't?
9:56
>> Right.
9:59
>> I mean, have you read the Bible? I mean,
10:01
it's got like like killing and there's
10:03
that one guy Samson. He's he's a stone
10:06
cold badass. Like, no, people don't
10:08
people don't think the Bible's all
10:09
boring nonsense. I I just look at the at
10:12
the at the at the interesting parts, you
10:14
know, stuff that supports my worldview.
10:17
>> Cool. We got a reader. That's exciting.
10:21
>> I'm the law around here. Um, let me go
10:24
and lay it down for you. You're not
10:26
going to cause any trouble, are you?
10:27
Either of you?
10:29
>> Uh, no, sir. They're not playing.
10:31
>> Define trouble.
10:34
>> I'm already going to have to keep an eye
10:36
on you. How about this? You don't intend
10:37
to start any trouble, do you?
10:39
>> I mean, I don't intend to start trouble,
10:41
but trouble just seems to have a way of
10:43
finding me. That's all I have to say.
10:46
This aren't my first This ain't my first
10:48
rodeo, if you know what I mean.
10:50
>> I suppose that's why you find yourself
10:51
in Williams Holler now, ain't it? All
10:53
right.
10:53
>> Yeah, I would much rather not. Your
10:55
guys' humidity here is killer. Something
10:58
fierce. Uh, makes me wish I was back
11:01
back in the west. That's all I got to
11:03
say.
11:03
>> I got great news for you. There ain't no
11:05
humidity down in the mines and that's
11:06
where you're going to be working and
11:08
that is negotiable.
11:10
>> You understand?
11:12
>> Yeah. For you're going to get paid in
11:15
company script every day. Uh, this ain't
11:17
no prison labor or anything like that,
11:18
but you're going to work. You got me?
11:22
>> Yeah, I got you.
11:23
>> I don't suppose there's a local
11:25
newspaper, is there?
11:27
Uh, what?
11:29
>> Yeah. All right, never mind.
11:33
>> Oh my god, chat is already being like, I
11:36
just looked it up. Worldview is is first
11:38
appeared in the 19th century, so it's
11:40
not anacronistic. We're going to be
11:42
anacronistic here. Okay, just accept it.
11:45
>> None of us were alive in the 1800s. I
11:47
don't know.
11:47
>> Yeah. So, just deal with it.
11:50
>> Okay. Whip out their laser pistols.
11:54
>> Actually, they were probably fine.
11:56
Old Gods of Appalachia said it's
11:58
primarily set in like 1920 to 1930. So
12:02
vague early 1900s,
12:04
>> but but again we're we're late 1800s
12:07
just to
12:07
>> Okay, got it.
12:08
>> That's where we're at. Okay. Um
12:10
>> so post Civil War essentially.
12:13
>> Yeah. Although I was going to try to
12:14
stay as far away from it as possible.
12:16
Alternate history. We're just gonna uh
12:19
Yeah.
12:19
>> Yeah.
12:20
>> Jesse Jesse is a female character.
12:22
Jesse's still going to go down the mines
12:23
because we're not sexist. You're doing
12:25
work.
12:26
>> No, that checks out. They made women
12:28
sometimes women prisoners work in minds,
12:30
too, I believe. So,
12:32
>> yeah.
12:33
>> Um, and finally, uh,
12:38
church is about to start. Both of you
12:40
need to get into church now. Now, you
12:42
look and and he shows you kind of a line
12:44
on the mountain where, you know, as the
12:46
sun's rising, shadows getting lower and
12:48
lower. He say, uh, before the sun hits
12:50
this railway, I need you to get to
12:52
church. Now, the good news is, uh,
12:55
Isaiah, Tyler, your character, uh, was
12:58
given a heavy bundle and you were told
13:00
to deliver it to Reverend Tim when you
13:02
got to Williams Holler. So, you got that
13:05
bundle with you.
13:07
Um, and so, so you needed to get the
13:10
church anyway because you have a
13:11
delivery to make. Now, let me let me ask
13:13
you a question. Are uh
13:17
you trying to take any kind of look at
13:19
that package before you hand it over? I
13:20
want to give you that. I would
13:22
absolutely now
13:23
>> absolutely
13:26
>> um
13:28
in my head Isaiah is a pretty honest
13:30
sort and unless I have some reason to
13:33
>> You're going to slow me down, aren't
13:34
you?
13:36
>> Just
13:38
Yes, ma'am. I am.
13:39
>> Mr. Goody.
13:41
>> Oh, we didn't
13:42
>> we didn't establish relationships
13:45
like the the game tells you that.
13:48
>> Yeah. And I think I already know cuz
13:50
mine was uh the a person's uh it was uh
13:54
I think for my descriptor it was uh one
13:56
of the players's uh outlook on life
14:00
really irks you and so I think I figured
14:03
out
14:06
and here we are.
14:08
>> Okay.
14:10
>> Um so as you begin to let me stop you.
14:14
Are you going to go and head over to
14:15
church?
14:17
>> Yeah, I guess. It's real obvious. You
14:19
can see it. So, Oats is going to walk
14:20
with you. But as you begin to leave, you
14:23
notice uh there's actually two different
14:25
locomotives. They both have coal
14:27
attached to them and they're they're
14:29
leaving from different directions. One
14:30
the way you came and one is continue
14:33
around. You can see how the rail goes
14:34
around the mountain.
14:36
Uh so, so they're shipping that coal to
14:38
two different locations.
14:40
>> Okay.
14:41
>> Um
14:43
All right. Uh you arrive in church and
14:45
everybody's mostly in their seats.
14:47
There's a few people standing up shaking
14:48
hands and usher sees you and brings you
14:52
along with Oats. Oats sits with you uh
14:54
puts you in the back row uh and right
14:56
about then the preacher stands up, gets
14:58
up to the podium. Um has a little bit of
15:02
an amplication system. They've got a
15:04
little electricity, a little money for
15:05
the finer things here. Not really. It's
15:07
it's trash. It's all tiny and
15:08
everything. But anyway, he he gets on
15:11
that microphone. He's super excited to
15:12
be there.
15:14
We We all long for a little peace on
15:16
this earth. A little slice of heaven.
15:20
That's what I hear you say. You You hear
15:23
Jim Tealing talking about picking apples
15:24
at his orchard and lie dah. You think
15:27
your days are working hard under the
15:28
soil's over. That you found paradise.
15:32
But I'm here to tell you that you will
15:34
not find the kingdom of heaven here on
15:36
earth. We are not placed in this life to
15:38
enjoy the fruits of heaven. We are meant
15:40
to seek salvation through labor.
15:43
This is not paradise. No, you won't find
15:45
it here. We are meant to suffer and
15:47
through suffering find salvation. Are
15:50
you a good man?
15:53
Are you a good woman?
15:55
Then salvation will be your eternal
15:57
reward. What is a single mortal life
16:00
compared to eternity in heaven? I tell
16:03
you that your labor brings you closer to
16:05
God. Deep down in the minds, extracting
16:07
what God here there for us to find. You
16:09
mourn the dead, but why? They're with
16:12
God in his kingdom now. They should
16:15
mourn us who haven't joined them yet.
16:17
Blessed are those who toil quickly and
16:19
join our father in their youth.
16:22
Now, I know what you're all scared of. I
16:26
hear the boss man saying that the coal
16:28
seems running dry. I hear him saying it
16:30
ain't going to happen. I'm here to say
16:32
it ain't going to happen. God won't let
16:34
it happen. We need to dig down deep. We
16:36
need to go deeper. And this week, we're
16:38
going to get down to level seven. We
16:40
need to suffer through. And I'm here to
16:43
tell you that God will deliver.
16:46
>> Boo.
16:49
>> I I just slightly further away from
16:51
Jesse.
16:53
>> Wait. Wait. Do Do you really?
16:56
>> Yeah.
16:56
>> I really
16:58
didn't even have to GM intrusion. You
17:02
>> look, I told you Jesse doesn't fight.
17:06
Trouble trouble seems to find her.
17:09
Um, uh, Oats Oats Oats looks over you
17:13
and just shakes his head like,
17:16
"Who who's there in the back?" Young
17:19
lady, stand up.
17:21
Yeah.
17:23
What do you have to say?
17:26
I have to say you're you're spouting
17:28
some gradea [ __ ] there, father. If
17:31
God believe if if if working in the mind
17:34
so to for the state because you I don't
17:37
know made some wrong turns in your life
17:40
or society abandoned you only for you to
17:43
end up dead. That don't sound like part
17:45
of God's plan. That sounds a lot like
17:47
your plan.
17:50
Well, I I don't quite follow what you
17:52
mean. I don't I don't follow the words,
17:54
but I I feel like you sound suspicious
17:57
to me. Like maybe you have a hard time
17:59
trusting people.
18:02
You don't know anything about me.
18:04
>> That's all right. I don't need to. Maybe
18:06
we'll get to know each other. You trust
18:08
in God?
18:10
>> I do.
18:11
>> You You think heaven will be your
18:13
eternal reward?
18:15
>> I don't know if heaven's in the cards
18:17
for me, father, but maybe for maybe for
18:20
some people.
18:22
>> I think I think you've got a choice in
18:24
how you make it there or not. But may
18:27
maybe we're going to be real good
18:28
friends.
18:32
Maybe.
18:34
Maybe.
18:36
All right. Well, uh
18:40
uh all the same folks, I'd say to you,
18:44
commit to your labor. Commit to your
18:45
work. Let's do what we got to do. Uh and
18:49
um you know, our tonal reward will be
18:53
heaven. Let's go ahead and let's hear
18:56
choir go and play us a song. Uh then
18:59
we'll we'll get on with our Sunday.
19:06
All right. Uh so choir kicks in, starts
19:09
playing a little awkward at first. You
19:10
know, they're they're a little shook up.
19:12
Uh but they they make it through
19:16
and um uh afterwards kind of everybody
19:19
breaks and uh you know, he gets back up
19:21
for a second. All right. Well, let's go
19:22
and walk next door. we got a Sunday
19:24
feast ready to go and um yeah, you know,
19:27
let's make communion, everybody.
19:30
And so everybody kind of shuffles over
19:31
out of the church into, you know, a big
19:33
hall where they've got um you know,
19:37
Sunday lunch put together.
19:39
>> All right. Okay. If there's anything I
19:42
know about churches in the South, church
19:45
food is awesome.
19:47
>> What?
19:49
I had exactly one experience with church
19:51
food and it was amazing. So I
19:54
>> maybe maybe maybe in the deep south I'm
19:56
thinking of churches like everywhere
19:58
else where you know jello pudding was a
20:01
I mean jello salad was a huge thing.
20:05
So I think you're wrong.
20:10
>> Also uh uh Randall we have a donation
20:13
for a GM intrusion. So, whenever you
20:15
want to just
20:15
>> God, I hate you guys.
20:18
>> No, no, keep them coming.
20:20
>> This is going to be a nightmare.
20:23
>> That's what we're here for.
20:25
>> Oh, all right. Uh, okay. I got that GM
20:28
intrusion and and let me know if there's
20:30
any particular recommendations that come
20:31
with it as they come. But I've got that
20:33
GM intrusion locked in. Okay. Uh, so
20:36
Reverend Timid is going to immediately
20:38
approach uh both of you. Um, well, I
20:43
suppose you two are my troublemakers.
20:44
Welcome to town. Uh, you you must be
20:48
Jesse. Is that right?
20:49
>> Yeah.
20:50
>> And that would make you Isaiah.
20:53
>> Yes, sir.
20:54
>> Okay. Isaiah, I believe you have a
20:55
package for me, right?
20:56
>> I sure do. Here you go, sir.
20:58
>> All right.
20:59
>> Completely completely undisturbed,
21:02
unbothered package.
21:04
>> Okay. He's he's going to look at it kind
21:05
of back front and to uh shove it down,
21:08
you know, in his back pocket. Um,
21:14
so Jesse, you didn't like my sermon.
21:17
What What part of my sermon didn't you
21:19
like?
21:22
Just a general gist, I guess. Um, I've
21:25
been told my whole life that being being
21:29
taken advantage of and being forced to
21:32
do work for other people for free is
21:34
some sort of idea of uh salvation. But I
21:38
got to tell you, father, I did a lot of
21:39
those stuff in other places that were
21:42
different from this. And but they worked
21:45
exactly the same. And I don't see any
21:48
sort of evidence of my life getting
21:50
better or any sort of salvation. I don't
21:52
feel like a better person. I don't feel
21:54
like society treats me better. I just
21:57
feel like people always look at me and
21:59
they'll think, "Fuck up."
22:02
Well, uh, you know, sometimes we
22:04
manifest our our our own lives. I'll
22:07
tell you though, everybody's getting
22:08
paid here. You know, you're going to get
22:10
you're going to get paid in script.
22:11
That's that's the local currency. Um
22:13
you'll be able to buy clothes, food, any
22:16
anything that you want to do. Um and we
22:20
get through a couple seasons, things are
22:21
going well, you doing fine. You know, if
22:23
if you if Williams Holler doesn't suit
22:25
your liking,
22:27
go on, do whatever you want. You going
22:29
to spend some time with us. You
22:30
understand?
22:31
>> See, I like this pastor. This pastor
22:33
seemed seems like he understands where
22:35
we're coming from and our frustrations.
22:37
The pastor that you were presenting
22:39
seemed like you were judging us for
22:41
being here in the first place. So maybe
22:43
you should tap into that understanding
22:45
pastor a little bit more.
22:48
>> Well, uh that that's some feedback and
22:51
and I'll take it. Well, I take
22:55
uh I need to I need to go have a a few
22:58
conversations, but I'll make my way back
22:59
around. I'll see how you're liking
23:00
meeting people here. Williams holler. Um
23:05
and and he leaves you. Um you look
23:07
around the room. Uh there's a lot of a
23:09
lot of folks varying age. Uh you can't
23:12
help but notice there's a few folks, you
23:13
know, a bit maimed. You see a couple
23:15
hands missing some fingers. You see a
23:16
couple torsos missing some arms. Um
23:20
>> Oh, I I thought you were going to say
23:21
missing some torsos. Like, uh
23:25
>> I think they're dead. I think they're
23:27
dead.
23:29
Um,
23:32
sorry. Somebody in chat, if it'll suit
23:35
your lacking, you could take all that
23:36
script and spin it in all the other
23:38
places that take their companies down
23:39
script.
23:41
>> It's Yeah, you know,
23:44
>> um,
23:46
a kitty.
23:47
>> Yep. The cat scarf. Is that Cora? Um,
23:50
yep.
23:51
>> Hi, Cora.
23:58
All right. Uh, so we're we're going to
24:01
have a uh a GM intrusion.
24:04
>> Great.
24:04
>> And by the rules, because donation, you
24:07
guys don't get to turn it down, so we're
24:09
just going to lay into it. Um, you you
24:12
all of a sudden you you hear a a
24:15
distressed woman uh just chirp out loud
24:18
and kind of everybody gets quiet and it
24:19
makes it awkward. She's like, "Hush now.
24:21
Hush. Nobody wants to hear that. Not
24:24
another word. You understand me?"
24:26
Um,
24:27
>> who's she speaking to?
24:28
>> Yeah. So, you look over and you kind of
24:30
got to get around some crowds, but uh
24:32
there's a there's a little girl sitting
24:34
playing with uh some some nesting dolls.
24:36
She has like some some metal nesting
24:38
dolls and um you can tell the little
24:40
girl's crying and the woman's chastising
24:42
her and a man comes over and puts an arm
24:44
and brings her kind of out of the way
24:47
and the little girl sitting there all
24:49
alone just still crying. Nobody's really
24:51
talking to her. Um, eyes stretch up to
24:54
the little girl immediately.
24:55
>> Okay. Before before you're able to get
24:57
there, um, Oats kind of pulls you aside
25:00
and tells you it's like, "Oh, you know,
25:02
don't don't mind Mara. Uh, she she's
25:04
mourning her daddy. He he got caught up
25:06
in the collapse digging down deeper at
25:08
seven earlier this week." Um, and her
25:11
her you know, her mom's uh,
25:16
Well, you understand.
25:19
Who's Mara? Is that the Is that the
25:21
[ __ ] that was yelling at the kid or is
25:22
that the kid?
25:24
>> Oh, it's the kid.
25:26
Uh I I assume the older woman is mom.
25:31
>> Yeah, that's right. Sheila.
25:33
>> Uh uh it's a rough time.
25:35
>> Yeah. Well, Sheila should learn some
25:37
manners.
25:39
>> All right. Uh do you still intend to
25:40
approach Marliff?
25:42
>> Mhm. If no one's going to stop me.
25:45
>> Nope. Nobody Nobody stops you. Oh, just
25:46
wanted you to understand what was going
25:47
on before you made your way in. So,
25:49
she's sitting there, she's kind of
25:50
crying just, "Hey, baby girl, what's
25:53
going on?
25:56
Um, she looks up at you and you know,
25:59
you can see a tear welling up in her
26:00
eyes."
26:02
>> Nothing.
26:02
>> And she kind of goes back to her toes.
26:04
So, I'm going to have
26:06
>> Okay, go ahead.
26:07
>> No, I was going to say, well, say what
26:09
you want to say and then um kind of tell
26:10
me your intent in this and I'm going to
26:12
have you make a hole.
26:15
Uh, a lot of adults here can be kind of
26:17
um, well, idiots, you know. A lot of
26:21
grown-ups think like they they know
26:22
things. The truth is they don't know
26:25
[ __ ] But it's all right. You want to
26:28
tell me something? I won't tell nobody.
26:30
I won't even tell your mom.
26:32
>> All right. Uh, go ahead and make me an
26:35
intellect roll. Um, and you you she
26:39
smirked when you said [ __ ] so you're
26:41
getting the feeling you might already be
26:42
making inroads.
26:44
>> You don't think it's going to be that
26:44
hard to get her to talk to?
26:45
>> How do Okay, so how do I do an intellect
26:47
role? I spend intellect, right?
26:49
>> No. No. So you you can uh And so
26:51
everybody at home, uh, we actually we've
26:54
never done a how to play cipher system.
26:56
>> Yeah,
26:56
>> this ain't it.
26:57
>> This is my first first time ever doing
27:00
this.
27:01
>> And so we're going to walk through it a
27:02
little bit, but for folks at home at
27:03
some point, we are going to come back.
27:04
if we're going to do a fullon how to
27:05
play. But to do this, you could just
27:08
roll a a d20. Um, and that's it. You can
27:12
expend effort where if you expend
27:14
effort, you are spending points from
27:16
your pool. Um, and so you have 10 points
27:19
in your intellect pool and every three
27:22
points you spend uh allow what you have
27:24
one effort. So yeah, you could spend
27:25
three points. You can reduce the
27:27
difficulty by one. And I know this is
27:30
complicated. It basically means
27:31
>> No, no. Yeah. So what is it? What is the
27:32
difficulty at right now?
27:34
>> Um, you you get the feeling it's going
27:36
to be pretty easy. And so in cypher
27:37
systems, sometimes your your GM will
27:39
just tell you a number like I need you
27:41
to roll a six or a seven. Sometimes
27:43
they'll tell you it's practically
27:43
impossible. Um, when it when it maybe
27:46
doesn't a lot of times given that
27:48
discreet, easy, medium, hard is a way a
27:50
GMO communicate. So, I'm telling you,
27:51
you think you got it.
27:53
>> Okay, I'll just roll a d20 then.
27:55
>> Roll me a d20.
27:56
>> Uh, 12.
27:58
>> Okay, that's enough. Um, she she
28:00
laughed. Cuz
28:02
I I like Yeah. You talk like daddy
28:04
talks.
28:06
Uh
28:08
do you
28:10
you do you you ever see strange things?
28:16
I see lots of strange things. Shadows
28:19
lurking in the night sometimes. Um weird
28:22
strangers following me. What? What is
28:24
it? What did you see, little one?
28:30
Uh,
28:32
mama said she doesn't want to hear it
28:33
and the preacher said that I shouldn't
28:35
talk about it. But
28:36
>> yeah, well, he's full of [ __ ] too.
28:39
>> Yeah, my daddy used to say that.
28:43
I saw my daddy last night.
28:46
>> What'd he say to you?
28:48
Well, he he was all tore up and he he is
28:51
smoking like he done crawl out of hell
28:53
and he was he was tearing at our front
28:55
door and and trying to pull pull pull
28:59
the door open, but he couldn't he
29:01
couldn't work he couldn't work the knob
29:03
and and the the door was locked and I
29:05
was afraid. I didn't want to unlock it.
29:07
I It was daddy, but it wasn't. And and
29:11
eventually he he saw me through the
29:13
window and he he stood up right and he
29:15
looked at me and he said, "Everything's
29:18
going to be all right." And then he he
29:21
just turned around and left.
29:24
Okay. I think
29:27
>> I think your daddy was right. And I
29:28
think he's looking out for you. Where
29:30
did you Where'd you see your daddy?
29:33
>> He He was right outside my front door.
29:36
>> Where do you live?
29:39
Uh well, you know, if you you go out in
29:41
Maine and you go east down the valley.
29:44
>> Okay. Well, if you see him again, you
29:47
let me know, right? I want to make sure
29:49
you're safe. Um I look at one of her
29:51
dolls and I'm like, "What's this one's
29:53
name?"
29:55
I don't name him. I just stack them. But
29:56
I've been My mama gave this to me. She
29:59
said it was something she played with
30:00
when she was a little girl. Uh but it's
30:02
been missing uh you know, two of the
30:05
nesting dolls. So, listen to this. And
30:06
you see like she loads them up right
30:08
quick, but she's missing two sizes. And
30:10
so she starts shaking and she's like,
30:11
"Mom says a little instrument just
30:14
um yeah, that's nice. I like that."
30:19
Yeah,
30:21
>> you're nice. What's your name?
30:22
>> My name's Jesse.
30:25
Jesse? My I'm Mara. Well, it's lovely to
30:28
meet you, Mara. And don't let your mommy
30:30
tell you what isn't and isn't real. If
30:32
you saw your daddy, then you saw him.
30:34
Okay.
30:36
Okay. Just know that if you ever get
30:38
scared and your mama don't help you
30:40
none, you just come to me. All right.
30:45
All right. Um and and just like you're
30:48
kind of wrapping up this conversation.
30:50
Uh Oats approaches you with uh Reverend
30:53
Tim and another man and and Oat says
30:57
like, "Well, y'all uh I want to
31:00
introduce you here to Jam. Um, jam's
31:03
gonna be uh well,
31:07
hopefully keep you out of jam. I I think
31:09
I met your brother, Peanut Butter. She
31:12
just stickers to herself.
31:15
>> The sheriff's name is Oats and this
31:17
person's name is Jam.
31:19
>> Yeah.
31:19
>> Yeah.
31:20
>> Yeah. Y'all just like to name each other
31:22
food products, don't you?
31:24
>> So, so Jam pipes in as my my real name
31:26
is James, but my mom always said I was a
31:29
little sweet and a little sticky.
31:32
All right, James. We're gonna be
31:33
friends.
31:35
>> Yeah. Damn.
31:36
>> I prefer Jim.
31:37
>> Damn. I like
31:38
>> I like this guy.
31:42
>> Uh,
31:44
and so Oats explains like, "So, Jam's
31:46
going to be showing you the ropes around
31:47
here. Um, he'll he'll, you know, you you
31:50
two are going to be sharing a house. Uh,
31:51
Jam will bring you. Um,
31:54
the horn goes off at 6. You need to be
31:58
you need to be at the mine 30 minutes
31:59
later, but you know, Jam will be able to
32:01
get you there, no problem. Uh, and I
32:03
think Foreman is going to have Jam show
32:04
you the ropes once you get down into the
32:05
mine tomorrow, too.
32:08
>> All right. Uh, how many days a week are
32:11
we working?
32:13
>> Six.
32:15
We take Sundays off. I physically just
32:20
shrink a little bit. Like,
32:24
oh, poor Yay. He's never worked a day in
32:26
his goddamn life.
32:28
>> Hey, hey, hey. Being a reporter is
32:31
honest work.
32:32
>> M sure it is. Let me see your hands
32:34
again.
32:35
>> I the softest hand.
32:38
>> Yeah, that's what I thought. You lotion
32:41
those babies,
32:43
you city slicker.
32:44
>> Hey, I never made enough money for
32:46
lotion. I said it was honest, not
32:48
wealthy.
32:50
>> Fair enough.
32:50
>> Yeah.
32:51
>> Yeah. Those are a lot of times two
32:53
different things.
32:54
Yeah.
32:56
>> Yeah. Oh, I'm like, both of you. Uh, you
32:59
you ever been in Kentucky?
33:01
>> Nah. Do you think he would be here? He
33:03
must have screwed up real hard to end up
33:06
down this way. Ah,
33:08
>> Jam, I'll be honest. I've never left
33:10
Long Island on purpose. Yeah, that
33:12
checks out.
33:14
>> You You lived on an island? God, what's
33:18
what's that like? You like coconuts?
33:21
My mom's got a picture My mom's got a
33:23
picture book with some coconuts in them.
33:24
Uh like two monkeys just banging them
33:26
around. I think
33:27
>> No, no, no. I I I think I learned this
33:30
somewhere. Uh I I think like Long
33:32
Island's one of those false names where
33:34
it's like it's kind of an island, but
33:37
it's not really an island. It's more
33:39
like a uh whatever. What is that thing
33:42
that comes out of the that pokes out
33:45
>> of the of the mainland? It's It's like a
33:48
peak
33:49
>> like an almost island. Peninsula.
33:51
>> Yeah. Peninsula.
33:52
>> That's it. That's it. I was going to say
33:54
something different.
33:55
>> Yeah. It's from the Latin. It means
33:57
almost island.
33:58
>> Does it?
33:59
>> Yeah.
33:59
>> I don't know. I don't know Latin.
34:01
>> Neither do I.
34:03
>> That's what my mom always said.
34:07
>> I know sticker Tyrannis. That's the one
34:10
I know.
34:11
>> I don't know much about dinosaurs.
34:14
>> Uh, all right. Mr.
34:16
Thor, I don't think we're a thing yet.
34:20
>> Uh, Mr. JM, I'm going to interrupt you
34:22
again. Uh, we have another donation for
34:25
a GM intrusion where whenever that
34:27
>> becomes relevant.
34:29
>> Uh, look, those ones are going to be
34:30
fun. All right, Jam. So, tell me more
34:34
about the hauler. Uh, how many how many
34:37
people are here? Like, obviously, Mr.
34:40
Oats here is the law. Who's in charge?
34:44
Um,
34:46
well, what what do you mean? Who's in
34:48
charge?
34:49
>> Who's in charge of what? Who's in charge
34:50
of uh
34:51
>> keeping us in line, keeping us from
34:53
escaping? That sort of thing.
34:55
>> Like, I mean, what what do you mean
34:56
escaping?
34:59
>> This is a prison complex, isn't it?
35:03
>> No. What are you talking about?
35:06
>> Then why
35:08
why was I brought here?
35:11
>> Oh, okay. You know, Oats Oats didn't
35:14
tell me a whole story. You got You got
35:15
in a jam somewhere? Yeah. You got in a
35:17
jam somewhere?
35:19
>> Yeah. I got accused of a crime I didn't
35:22
commit. They locked me in chains, put me
35:24
on a railway, didn't tell me where the
35:26
heck I was going, and I end up Turns
35:28
out, I guess, I'm in Kentucky.
35:31
And the first thing that comes out of
35:32
Oat's mouth is we're going to put you to
35:34
work. You're going to have to work and
35:36
you're going to make a wage. And that
35:38
sure sounds like prison to me. Usually
35:40
folks get to ch Last I checked this was
35:43
a free country and people get to choose
35:45
what kind of work they do but uh he
35:47
wasn't acting like I had a choice in the
35:49
matter. Are you telling me that I'm free
35:50
to go? Cuz I'll be honest with you, Jim,
35:52
that I'm free to go. I'm I'm going to go
35:54
ahead and just walk on out of here.
35:56
Maybe maybe uh take a horse with me.
36:00
>> Well, that'd be stealing unless you
36:01
bought that horse. You got you got
36:02
enough skirt by a horse?
36:04
>> Sure.
36:08
just pop up over his head. Just doubt.
36:14
>> Yeah. Okay. Yeah. I I know.
36:16
>> Jesse checks her bag. She's got $2 to
36:19
her name.
36:21
>> Um two is a lot of money.
36:23
>> Yeah.
36:24
>> $2 is is is a lot of money, but it's not
36:27
enough to buy a horse.
36:29
>> Fair.
36:29
>> Yeah. So, we we we get folks uh you
36:33
know, he kind of lowers his voice a
36:34
little like like you you know, every
36:36
every couple years. Um, hell, you know,
36:39
I you know, I think they already snuck
36:41
out, but I could introduce introduce you
36:43
tomorrow. Maybe we'll get to mine. How
36:45
of you folks, you know, who who, you
36:46
know, they had to spend a couple seasons
36:48
working, but at the end of it, they just
36:49
decided to stay in Williams Holler cuz
36:51
hell, it's a better life than wherever
36:52
they came from before. Maybe that'll
36:54
happen to you. But no, I mean, you're
36:55
not uh everybody gets paid. You're going
36:57
to get paid same thing I get paid for
36:58
working tomorrow.
37:00
>> That'll be the first job I've worked
37:01
where I actually got paid in got to be
37:05
at least three years. Yeah, it feels
37:07
real good.
37:09
>> Yeah, I guess I would much rather be
37:12
doing something and knocking rocks
37:13
against other rocks. Speaking
37:15
personally.
37:17
>> Um, well, we
37:20
wait. I think that you just basically
37:22
described what I do all day.
37:25
>> You said you like it or don't like it. I
37:27
got confused because you used a lot of
37:28
words back to back.
37:30
>> I don't like it. If a if a man if you if
37:33
a man like you lacks it and gets
37:35
fulfillment out of it, I ain't judging
37:37
man. Whatever makes a man happy, you do
37:39
it. As long as it's not, you know,
37:41
hurting somebody else, I guess. Um,
37:44
>> how you feel about blast
37:48
like blowing blowing stuff up?
37:50
>> Yeah.
37:51
>> Yeah, that's pretty cool. I like that.
37:55
>> The uh the
37:56
>> I also have a f I have a big fondness
37:58
for fire. I mean, I didn't say that.
38:03
Well, I'll tell you what, the the
38:04
boomers are uh you know, they die all
38:06
over time, so they're always making room
38:08
in the ranks. Um you know, maybe you
38:10
spend a few months, you get used to
38:12
everybody. Um
38:14
>> I see what you did there. I see what you
38:16
did there.
38:17
>> Maybe you could take the blasting
38:18
things. Um you know, there's there's all
38:20
kinds of working in mind. I ain't just
38:21
banging rocks against other rocks.
38:24
>> Fair enough.
38:26
>> Uh okay, Mr. Jam, if you would be so
38:30
kind as to uh lead us to wherever we'll
38:32
be living. I think I'd like to put down
38:35
these suitcases that I've been hauling
38:37
under.
38:38
>> I'm not going to live with this Yankee
38:40
loser.
38:41
>> Well, for a little bit. You know, you
38:43
get enough script, maybe you can figure
38:44
something else out. But for now, um we
38:46
had we had a few deaths this week, so we
38:48
got some homes that are empty. Don't
38:49
mind the stuff. Uh you can think of it
38:52
as a what was it? My mom used to always
38:54
say fully furnished. Um,
38:58
anyway, yeah, grab a bite whenever
39:00
you're ready. We'll make our way over.
39:01
Okay.
39:04
>> All right.
39:06
>> Nice meeting you, Jam. Tell Peanut
39:08
Butter I said hi.
39:11
>> Can't believe you met my grandpappy.
39:16
>> Okay. Um, so yeah, you you know, you're
39:20
able to peruse a little bit, able to
39:21
talk to some folks, eat some food. The
39:23
food is delicious. It's great. There's
39:24
uh there is fried chicken, there's fresh
39:26
fish. Um somebody, you know, mighty
39:28
proud to tell you they they had a trot
39:30
line going across the creek and um
39:32
that's the haul they had for the week.
39:35
>> Let me share it with you.
39:36
>> This is this is uh this is food fit for
39:39
a cane. I'm used to I'm used to moldy
39:42
bread and porridge all the time.
39:45
>> Yeah. You guys eat like this every day.
39:48
>> Well, I mean it's it's Sunday supper, so
39:50
you know that's special. Well,
39:52
>> yeah. Sunday. Sunday. You know what we
39:54
got at Sunday supper at my last joint?
39:57
Salt.
39:57
>> What's that?
39:59
>> Well, that's fancy.
40:02
>> Salt to add to our porridge and moldy
40:04
bread. That's what we got.
40:08
>> Someday.
40:08
>> Long for salt.
40:10
>> Someday Isaiah's going to write a book
40:12
about Jesse and just call Tall Tales.
40:16
Some of them might even be true.
40:21
That is that is 100%. Jesse, she likes
40:24
to tell a bunch of tall tales for sure.
40:28
>> All right. Uh yeah. So, I'll head for
40:30
the church food and kind of try and
40:33
eaves drop on conversations. Try and
40:35
figure out like what are folks concerned
40:37
about locally, I guess.
40:39
>> Yeah, absolutely. Um, so I'm going to
40:43
have you make uh essentially this is
40:46
going to be a stealth check and I
40:48
believe to do that we're going to make a
40:51
speed check. Um, do you have anything
40:55
that makes it a little bit easier to do
40:56
that? Um,
40:58
>> you're stealing.
41:02
>> Uh, I do not have anything about
41:05
stealth. I am trained in finding or
41:08
noticing small details. I am trained in
41:10
sneaking. Can I help him?
41:13
>> Um, yeah. So, you you folks could do
41:16
this together. Uh, Tyler, what is your
41:18
applied observation skill? It actually
41:20
cut off on the sheet that I'm looking
41:21
at.
41:22
>> Oh, um, it it's just finding or noticing
41:25
small details.
41:28
>> Okay, cool. I got it. Um, and then if
41:30
you go to do this, you can spend points
41:32
and be and ease the ease it easier.
41:34
Okay, I got you. Um, here's what we're
41:37
going to do. I'm gonna have you make uh
41:40
Jesse, you're going to make me a speed
41:42
roll. Um Isaiah, you're going to make me
41:44
an intellect role.
41:45
>> Okay.
41:46
>> And it's up to you whether you would
41:47
want to apply effort to this or not, but
41:49
people are trusting. They're just having
41:50
that conversation. Pretty easy to you.
41:53
>> If you're trained in a skill that lowers
41:54
the difficulty, yes.
41:56
>> Um no, wait.
42:00
>> Yeah.
42:02
Yeah.
42:02
>> Yeah. I'm pretty sure it does.
42:03
>> It eases it. You're absolutely right.
42:05
And so easing it basically reduces the
42:07
number you have to roll by three points,
42:09
>> right? Um so uh what is what would be
42:13
the difficulty for this particular roll?
42:16
>> Um so the difficulty started as a three.
42:19
Super easy. Um if you're trained, it's
42:21
going to go down to a two. So you got to
42:22
roll a six.
42:24
>> Yeah, I can do that.
42:25
>> I think I'm going to go straight and
42:26
just see what happens.
42:27
>> Okay.
42:28
>> I almost I rolled another 12.
42:32
>> I failed. I got a five. Oh, buddy.
42:36
That's funny,
42:36
>> buddy.
42:37
>> Okay. Um, all right. We're gonna handle
42:40
you each in kind. Uh, we're actually
42:41
we're going to start with Isaiah. Um,
42:45
uh, you you know, you're eating some
42:47
fish and you think you're being, you
42:49
know, all nonchalant. Um, and all of a
42:52
sudden, the the two women that are
42:53
talking finally just look up and turn to
42:55
look at you. Can I help you?
42:58
Oh, I I'm sorry, folks. I'm new in town.
43:02
Uh, I I'm just trying to get my
43:04
bearings, figure out what's going on in
43:06
town. Uh, my name is Isaiah. So, sorry
43:10
for interrupting you. You please enjoy
43:11
your lunch.
43:12
>> Just let face paling.
43:16
>> You could have let off of an
43:17
introduction instead of sitting there
43:18
just listening. Who knows? We could have
43:20
been talking about any kind of personal
43:21
business and you just letting the words
43:23
flow into your head.
43:25
>> Uh, you're right.
43:26
>> What do you What What did you do before
43:28
you got to town? Were you just there
43:29
listening to people, writing down what
43:30
they say?
43:33
me.
43:34
>> Well, ma'am, uh to be honest, I was a
43:36
reporter, so a little bit. Yes.
43:40
>> Oh.
43:43
Anyway, they they walk away and they got
43:46
uh they kind of get quiet. You can't
43:48
hear what they're saying anymore. Okay.
43:49
Uh we're going to come over to you.
43:52
>> Um All right. Uh and I do, by the way, I
43:55
know we have that jam intrusion queued
43:57
up. Don't worry, it's locked up here in
43:59
the brain. Uh all right. So Jesse, um,
44:03
you are able to listen in a little bit.
44:06
Uh, and it it's two younger men talking.
44:08
It's like, you know, I I don't know. Uh,
44:11
I I think I think Keelan's Orchard
44:14
sounds like a a hell of a deal,
44:17
you know. Well, but but you heard you
44:19
heard the reverend, you know, talking
44:20
about labor or whatnot. Uh, you know,
44:24
I'm not interested in getting to heaven.
44:26
I I don't know if I'm going to be able
44:27
to do it. You you know what Tin's doing
44:29
up there, right? He's making cider. He's
44:31
making apple jack. It's all booze and
44:33
alcohol. I heard the reverend, he was
44:35
talking to my papy the other day and he
44:36
was saying that we're going to wind up
44:37
just like the city. A bunch of drunkards
44:39
running around. Nobody's going to want
44:40
to do any work. Um and and hell, do you
44:44
think, you know, are you going to make
44:45
money in making the Applejack?
44:48
I I don't think so. I think I'm going to
44:49
keep mining. I ain't gonna I ain't gonna
44:51
get involved in any of that.
44:55
>> Um I'll slip away and head back to
44:58
Isaiah. be like, "So, nobody told me
45:01
there was brewing going on here."
45:04
>> Uh, is there?
45:06
>> Apparently, I was listening to that uh
45:09
that group that group of guys over there
45:11
who you failed to try to listen to.
45:15
They're talking about there's a there's
45:17
some sort of apple orchard where this
45:19
guy, what was his name again, Randall?
45:22
>> Uh, Tand uh Joe Tand. Joe Tealand is uh
45:26
he's trying to make uh some sort of
45:29
cider or something out there. I mean,
45:32
hell, I I'm an expert at that stuff. I
45:35
used to help my my uncle Joey distill
45:37
moonshine all the time. Why didn't I be
45:39
put on that instead of this?
45:41
>> I don't think that's legal, Jesse.
45:46
That that might be why
45:47
>> is it? Is it not? I mean, cider is my
45:51
understanding is cider is a very very
45:54
common thing and it's just how you
45:55
preserve apples through the winter. So,
45:58
you make sure you have like fresh fruit
46:00
available essentially.
46:03
>> Applejack and moonshine that's a little
46:05
more iffy because of the whole exploding
46:08
parts, but also it's 1900, so I don't
46:12
know.
46:12
>> No, I think above above board. I think
46:15
you're right. Jesse doesn't realize
46:17
this. Yeah. Um, and she's like,
46:22
>> "Bruing alcohol is illegal."
46:26
>> Actually, uh, I think chat may be
46:28
correct. Uh, at this time, we're
46:31
pre-prohibition. It's super legal. Like,
46:34
everyone's fine with it. This is just a
46:35
thing you do with food.
46:37
>> Yeah.
46:38
>> It probably still blows up though.
46:40
>> Yeah. Like, so rural world history,
46:43
like, think about the the fast western
46:44
expansion. Um folks were growing a lot
46:47
of grain, a lot of wheat, a lot of corn.
46:50
Uh and the corn grew super easy. But the
46:52
problem is corn rots. So you couldn't
46:54
there was no good mechanism of shipping
46:56
corn from the Midwest all the way to the
46:58
coastal cities where there were people
47:00
to consume it. The whole reason like
47:03
Okay. Originally in the colonies, do you
47:05
know what the American liquor was?
47:07
>> Whiskey.
47:08
>> No. Rum.
47:09
>> No.
47:10
>> Rum. Oh. They got they got sugarcane
47:13
from the Caribbean. Brought it in. I
47:15
think they grew some cane like in the
47:17
colonies, but they made rum. They loved
47:19
rum. Whiskey took over because
47:23
>> Yeah. Yeah. The whiskey took over
47:24
because in the Midwest they were growing
47:27
all this corn, but they couldn't get it
47:28
down the river fast enough where it
47:30
rotted. So, the easiest thing to do with
47:32
it was ferment it, distill it, and then
47:34
sell it as whiskey.
47:36
>> Got it.
47:37
>> Um, and then there's a whole history
47:39
with like how scotch comes into this
47:41
with American whiskey barrels where
47:42
>> of course you know this. Of course you
47:44
know this history. You any trip or you I
47:47
don't even I didn't even know this.
47:49
That's very interesting.
47:50
>> Yeah. All right. So, um but yeah, so it
47:54
would be legal to to make um and and
47:57
people wouldn't have called it moonshine
47:58
yet. That's a whole another history,
48:00
too. Uh but it is it is legal to
48:02
distill. Uh and and Jim actually walks
48:04
up in the middle of you folks having
48:06
this conversation. It's like, "Oh, you
48:08
hearing about Telin's Orchard?"
48:10
>> Yeah. A lot of folks are talking about
48:12
it. Is it just Is it a oneman operation
48:15
up there?
48:16
>> Well, he's trying to get people to come
48:18
work with him, but everybody's been a
48:19
little loathed to
48:21
>> I'll work with him.
48:22
>> Mine.
48:23
>> Well, no, you can't. Oats. Oats said you
48:25
got to go to the mine. I'm taking
48:26
>> I thought you said this wasn't a prison.
48:29
>> It's It's You know, it's limited
48:31
choices, not no choices. Um,
48:33
>> is this not America? Did I hit my head
48:35
and we ended up somewhere that's not
48:36
America? What is this [ __ ]
48:40
>> You know,
48:40
>> Jesse, I'll be honest. It it this seems
48:42
like a we are here or we're somewhere
48:45
worse situation for you and me. So
48:48
>> So it's prison. It might be gusseted up
48:52
without walls and y'all might act like
48:54
we have some sort of freedom choice and
48:57
that oh we're getting paid but just call
49:00
a spade a spade. It's prison is what
49:02
you're saying.
49:04
>> James Jam just looks he's like yeah I
49:07
think you got it.
49:08
>> Thank you. Thank you. At least you At
49:09
least you're being honest with me.
49:12
>> Well, I wouldn't dare lie to you. I'm
49:13
your friend.
49:14
>> You did. You told me this wasn't prison
49:16
not a few minutes ago.
49:18
>> By my definition, I wouldn't call it a
49:19
prison. But you're giving me your
49:21
definition and I'm hearing and I'm
49:22
saying, "Yeah, the way you think I call
49:24
this a prison." You're right.
49:27
>> Glad we got that sorted.
49:28
>> It is It is not prison, but it is a
49:31
prison.
49:32
>> It's like a minimum security prison.
49:36
Yeah. Well,
49:37
>> yeah. You know, you uh you get too far
49:39
out, the swamp is going to eat you
49:40
anyway, so you might as well, you know,
49:42
stay in time.
49:43
>> Fantastic. And how long how long are you
49:47
say you've been in this? Not prison.
49:50
>> I was born I was born here. I grew up
49:52
here. Most people here grew up here.
49:54
>> And you have to they force you to do
49:56
this?
49:57
>> Well, no, but I I like working in the
49:59
mine.
50:01
>> Hey, Isaiah, I think we stumbled into
50:03
some sort of cult.
50:08
Uh,
50:10
all right.
50:11
>> All right. Anyway, um, great.
50:13
>> But no, no. Uh, I mean, the the
50:16
>> So, why don't we start walking? While
50:17
we're walking, I'll tell you a little
50:18
bit about, uh, Ta and his orchard.
50:22
>> Yep. Yeah. Yes. Lead lead us onward, Mr.
50:25
Jam. Tell us about this orchard. This
50:27
sounds like the most interesting thing
50:28
in town at the moment.
50:30
>> Okay. So, uh, you you get, uh, you get
50:34
outside. Um, hours have passed, you
50:37
know, between the sermon, the choir
50:38
singing, church, eating, talking,
50:41
getting laughed at, all those things.
50:42
Hours have passed. Um, the sun has
50:45
actually passed behind the other
50:47
mountain. And so, you know, the size
50:50
still lit a blaze. You can still see
50:51
where you're walking, but it's getting
50:53
dark because you're down in the holler,
50:54
and that's how life goes. Okay.
50:57
um you you begin walking and um Jam
51:00
starts to explain to you. So, you know,
51:02
we've been we've been working working
51:04
the coal out of that out of that
51:05
mountain for for generations. You know,
51:08
as long as our families have been here
51:10
and uh we've been lucky, you heard the
51:13
preacher talking about it. Every time we
51:15
think we're out of coal, um we dig a
51:18
little bit deeper. Uh we get a little
51:20
bit under the mountain and we we find
51:24
more coal. We keep digging. and keep,
51:26
you know, that's what that's what fuels
51:28
this town. That's what keeps us going.
51:30
Well, uh about 20 years ago, uh two
51:34
times ago, so we were still up on four
51:36
at that point. Um
51:39
Ton, he he had a everybody said he had a
51:42
nervous breakdown. I was too young to
51:44
really remember it, but uh they they
51:46
said he got to a point where he just he
51:48
wouldn't go into the mine anymore. So he
51:50
uh cleared up and he he points up at the
51:52
orchard. He's like cleared off that
51:54
whole face of the mountains, tore down
51:55
every tree, uh built um what do you what
51:58
do you call it? Like terraces, made it
52:00
into some flat levels. Uh and he planted
52:04
he planted an apple orchard. And he said
52:06
then that it was a gift for the town
52:08
that when it matured, we'd be able to
52:10
work the orchard instead of working the
52:11
mines and everybody could afford to
52:13
live, you know, wouldn't have to go down
52:14
below. And I mean, back, you know,
52:16
everybody thought it was crazy talk
52:17
because one, how the hell are you going
52:18
to grow an apple orchard on the side of
52:19
a mountain? Nobody did it. Uh and and
52:22
two, like why, you know, we're we're
52:25
going to get to more coal. We'll keep
52:27
mining. It'll be fine. Um but everybody
52:31
says
52:33
something spooked him. Something made
52:36
him never want to step foot inside a
52:38
mountain ever again.
52:40
>> What spooked him?
52:42
>> I mean, I don't know. I You know, I've
52:45
had a couple drinks before and asked him
52:46
and he he won't talk.
52:50
So,
52:51
>> can I talk to him?
52:54
>> Yeah, I bet I bet you can.
52:55
>> Or am I not allowed to do anywhere and
52:58
talk to who I want to?
53:00
>> No, you're
53:00
>> cuz I got cuz I because I got to tell
53:02
you, even in my last join, I was able to
53:05
do that, you know, as long as it was
53:07
within the walls. But I couldn't punch
53:09
anyone I wanted. They had they had kind
53:11
of a mild uh
53:13
>> you prohibition, if you will.
53:15
>> Yeah, a bit of a prohibition.
53:16
>> They have the same thing here. You don't
53:18
say.
53:19
>> Yeah. Yeah.
53:21
>> Believe it or not, it is forboden to
53:23
just be whailing on people unless they
53:25
deserve it.
53:26
>> If a guy Okay. So, how that's funny you
53:28
say. So, if if a guy deserves it, if a
53:31
guy's being an [ __ ] can I still
53:33
punch his teeth in or is that just not
53:36
>> Jesse? That's assault. That's a crime.
53:38
They put you in jail for that.
53:40
>> They send you places like this.
53:41
>> I just think it I think it's just just
53:43
basic common decency and learning. How's
53:46
a guy gonna learn that he's not supposed
53:48
to talk to a lady in a certain way if he
53:50
doesn't get his teeth punched in on
53:52
occasion?
53:54
>> M Jesse, maybe words. Maybe try words,
53:57
Jesse.
53:58
>> No, that never works.
54:03
>> Words. Words is what started all this
54:04
mess. What are you talking about?
54:06
>> Exactly. Yeah, word. Words was what
54:08
started the problem in the first place.
54:10
How you going to fix a problem with more
54:13
words? Uh,
54:15
>> I don't understand what's coming out of
54:17
your mouth right now, Isaiah.
54:18
>> Josh,
54:20
actually, assaulting someone over an
54:22
insult wasn't usually a generable
54:24
offense in the 19th century.
54:26
>> Josh, I swear to God. I swear to God,
54:29
you're being worse than Quasit usually
54:31
is, man.
54:33
>> Wait, I'm with you.
54:36
>> Oh my god.
54:37
>> This is all I want to say this is
54:39
alternate Appalachia. So if something we
54:42
do is out of the ordinary,
54:45
just go with it because it's an
54:47
alternate universe.
54:49
>> So Joshua CC, but JM is trying to talk
54:51
you out of it. Go ahead,
54:53
>> Randall. I am going to remind you we are
54:54
waiting for a GM intrusion.
54:56
>> Oh, yeah. Yeah,
54:57
>> there.
54:58
>> Okay, cool.
54:59
>> Yeah. Uh,
55:01
don't worry. I got you.
55:04
>> How much is the GM intrusion?
55:06
>> Uh, $25. So folks are being very
55:09
generous.
55:10
That's incredibly low for a G.
55:15
>> No, but hey, we we love our guest. We're
55:16
very excited.
55:17
>> Yeah, we do.
55:20
>> All right. Um,
55:23
>> does he know the word? How does he know
55:25
the word for
55:28
>> I actually said for
55:32
anyway,
55:33
>> it's not a word.
55:35
No,
55:35
>> it makes sense. That's that's the kind
55:36
of thing Jam would say. Um,
55:39
all right. Uh,
55:42
all Yeah, you're you're GM intrusion.
55:44
So, you're having this conversation. All
55:45
of a sudden, you hear um you hear
55:48
snortings
55:51
>> and uh you hear stomping just definitely
55:55
a horse.
55:57
>> Um and um you look up and you see uh in
56:02
the woods a herd of deer.
56:06
>> H what? Wait. Yeah, just heard heard a
56:08
deer kind of walking through the woods.
56:10
Uh and and Jam is like, "Oh, hey, take,
56:13
you know, take a look." Uh, man, I wish
56:15
I wish I had my gun. We can get that'd
56:17
be good eating.
56:18
>> Um, go.
56:19
>> I wish I didn't take away my gun either.
56:22
I will very delicately pull out my
56:24
camera.
56:26
>> Okay.
56:26
>> Trying to take a picture.
56:28
So, as you're as you're doing this, um,
56:34
go ahead and I I want to get you to I
56:37
think we're going to roll intellect for
56:38
this. Um,
56:44
you get a gander, you get a look, and
56:47
something seems off to you. And as
56:49
you're processing it, Jam says, "Look at
56:53
your feet. Look down.
56:57
Look down.
56:58
>> Um, yeah. Don't Don't look at it. We're
57:00
just going to keep walking. Uh, are
57:02
either of you going to sneak a look?
57:05
>> Yes, 100%.
57:07
>> Yeah.
57:07
>> Okay. All right. Um, I'm going to have I
57:10
think we're going to go for a speed roll
57:11
for this. Uh, and this is going to be
57:13
difficult to do without
57:16
>> Does this qualify as part of my sneaking
57:19
skill?
57:20
>> Yes.
57:21
>> So, I'll let you ease it with that.
57:23
>> All right. So, what is the difficulty
57:25
for me now?
57:26
>> It's gonna be a difficulty four, which
57:28
means you're easing it to three.
57:30
>> Okay.
57:31
>> So, you need to roll a nine or better.
57:33
Tyler, you're going to roll a 12 or
57:34
better.
57:35
>> Can I spend some effort and some speed
57:39
to make it easier?
57:41
>> Yeah. So, you're going to do effort.
57:42
That means you're going to have to spend
57:44
three uh
57:45
>> speed.
57:46
>> Three speed from your speed pool,
57:48
>> which I have 17 of, so that's fine. But,
57:50
>> actually, you have one edge, so you only
57:52
have to spend two.
57:53
Oh, okay.
57:55
>> Yeah. Um,
57:58
>> right. Because I have an edge in in uh
58:00
speed.
58:00
>> Speed. That's right.
58:01
>> Uh, so that brings it down to uh a two
58:05
difficulty. So, six. That's what I have
58:08
to roll.
58:10
>> And I'm
58:10
>> I rolled exactly six. Nice. Okay. I'm
58:13
just rolling straight. I'm hoping for
58:15
the best.
58:16
>> You You got to get a 12.
58:17
>> 16. 16. Okay. All right. Um, you both
58:21
look up ever so briefly and you get your
58:24
eyes back down real quick. Uh, so you
58:27
think the creature maybe didn't notice
58:29
that you were looking, but uh,
58:31
immediately what you realize is that the
58:34
thing that you are looking at, the thing
58:35
that is stomping and hissing at you is
58:37
not a deer. You've seen deer before and
58:39
this ain't it. Uh, it's got uh, it's,
58:43
you know, you know how a deer's arms
58:45
bend and the arms bend.
58:48
Are we with uh we with Jam still?
58:51
>> Yeah, you're still with Jam. Jam was the
58:52
one who told you, "Look down." Yeah.
58:53
>> Don't look at it.
58:54
>> Um
58:56
>> but real quick to give you the
58:58
description. So its arms have been in
58:59
the the wrong direction. You saw uh what
59:02
looked like almost like antlers were
59:03
coming out of the front of its arms. Uh
59:06
it's got it had uh four pairs of eyes
59:09
running up a two long snout and long
59:11
sharp teeth that looked like it had a
59:14
mixture of spitting blood in it
59:15
dripping. Uh, and they were stomping and
59:18
staring straight at it. Straight at you.
59:21
>> Damn. What the [ __ ] is that?
59:24
>> We just We need to keep walking. Just
59:26
try not to look at it.
59:28
>> Okay. Is that a normal thing here?
59:31
>> What's it going to do if we don't look
59:32
at it? What's it going to do if we look
59:34
at it?
59:35
>> Shut. We We We don't We don't want any
59:38
trouble. Um, you you hear the stomping
59:42
and you feel the sound getting closer to
59:45
you. Um,
59:47
>> can we go inside? Can we put anything
59:49
between us and that?
59:50
>> No, there's there's there's nothing to
59:52
go to. You're in the middle of the woods
59:53
right now.
59:54
>> Oh jeez. Should we run? Should we run?
59:57
>> No, just just walk walk real calm. Um, I
1:00:01
am going to have you both roll me an
1:00:03
intellect roll. I'm going to hinder
1:00:05
this. So, you're Yeah, you're going to
1:00:08
need to roll a 15 unless you want to,
1:00:10
for instance, expend effort to ease it.
1:00:12
Oh,
1:00:12
>> jeez.
1:00:14
Uh, that's a lot. Um,
1:00:18
yeah. Uh,
1:00:22
so I could reduce it to a 12.
1:00:27
Yeah, I'm definitely spending some
1:00:29
points on this. All right, do it.
1:00:31
>> What is What is your in what is your
1:00:33
intellect?
1:00:34
>> Uh, in my intellect pool is 16. I've got
1:00:37
one edge, so I'll be able to reduce the
1:00:40
cost by one.
1:00:41
>> I have 10. So, um, yeah, I'll reduce it
1:00:45
by one.
1:00:46
>> So, got to get
1:00:48
>> Okay, so you both need to roll twelves
1:00:50
then. Let's do it.
1:00:50
>> Here we go.
1:00:52
>> Not a 12.
1:00:55
>> I got a six.
1:00:56
>> Okay.
1:00:57
>> I I got a three.
1:00:59
>> All right. In a moment, the creature is
1:01:01
upon you. Uh, and we're going to go
1:01:03
ahead and roll initiative.
1:01:06
>> Oh, no. Oh, no.
1:01:11
Oh boy. Um,
1:01:14
now is a terrible time for me to not
1:01:15
remember how initiative works in this
1:01:17
game.
1:01:17
>> So, we're just going to do a speed roll.
1:01:18
And it's the same as always. You could,
1:01:20
if you wanted to, spend effort to try to
1:01:22
go first.
1:01:23
>> Um, uh, Jesse, I was because you made a
1:01:25
comment a second ago. Uh, they they left
1:01:28
you with your gun
1:01:30
>> um in your in your pack. Yeah. And so if
1:01:32
you I'm not going to deny you your
1:01:34
equipment. Um, and you're out in the
1:01:36
middle of nowhere. So, if you wanted to
1:01:38
um a little bit of redcon here, but if
1:01:40
you wanted to say like once you left the
1:01:42
church, you went ahead and strapped on.
1:01:44
I'm good with that.
1:01:45
>> Yeah.
1:01:46
>> Um cuz you're walking in the middle of
1:01:47
the woods. Um
1:01:50
uh Jam Jam pulls out a knife. Uh Isaiah,
1:01:54
what what do you what do you do?
1:01:58
What me? Um I have
1:02:01
>> the pen is my dear. I have a pecket gez
1:02:05
words.
1:02:06
>> Pocket knife.
1:02:07
>> Yeah, I have a pocketk knife. So, I'll
1:02:08
grab for that, I guess. Um, hey,
1:02:11
somebody in chat is telling me they just
1:02:12
don't a lucky charm. All right. Uh,
1:02:16
>> awesome. Awesome. Okay.
1:02:18
>> Um,
1:02:21
Jesse, uh, as you reach for the gun,
1:02:25
you, um, before you do that, you you you
1:02:28
your hand slips and you find a a
1:02:30
children's toy. Um, it's uh you've seen
1:02:35
one before. It's called a they called a
1:02:36
hoie stick here. You might have called
1:02:37
it something else. Uh, you spin your
1:02:40
hands on it and when you do that it kind
1:02:43
of creates wind and it flies up in the
1:02:45
air and it's really cutesy and
1:02:46
everything, but you feel a strong
1:02:48
instinct that if you were to use that,
1:02:50
uh, maybe that joy might protect you
1:02:53
just a little bit.
1:02:54
>> Yep. I'm going to do that
1:02:56
>> once. But we got to do Let's get an
1:02:58
initiative order first, though.
1:02:59
>> Okay. So, what is it? A speed roll.
1:03:02
>> Um, a speed roll.
1:03:04
>> Gosh.
1:03:04
>> And you got to uh the creature is going
1:03:07
to go on nine. So, if you roll better
1:03:08
than a nine, you're going to go before
1:03:10
the creature. Worse than nine, you
1:03:11
won't.
1:03:12
>> All right. I'm going to spend effort to
1:03:14
go
1:03:16
uh down. So, I have to roll a six or
1:03:20
higher now.
1:03:22
And I rolled exactly a six again.
1:03:25
>> Love it.
1:03:26
>> Uh I rolled a seven. So, I believe and I
1:03:30
said,
1:03:31
>> "Yeah, you're going after after the
1:03:32
creature." Okay. Okay. Um All right. Uh
1:03:36
Jesse,
1:03:37
>> you you happen to have a Lucky Charm in
1:03:38
your pocket. Thank you, donor. We
1:03:39
appreciate it.
1:03:41
>> What does Lucky Charm do?
1:03:43
>> Uh so, so it's the Hoie Stick.
1:03:45
>> Oh, it's a hoie stick. Okay. Yeah.
1:03:47
>> The Lucky Charm donation gives a cipher.
1:03:49
The cipher that you got was a hoie
1:03:51
stick.
1:03:51
>> Gotcha. Yeah, I will I will spin it.
1:03:54
>> All right. So, let me um give me just a
1:03:58
second. I'm gonna go ahead and read that
1:03:59
out loud so everybody understands what
1:04:01
this does.
1:04:02
>> So, real quick, Randall, um so for the
1:04:04
Lucky Charm incentive, uh I asked for
1:04:08
folks to describe a general idea of what
1:04:11
the cipher is. Um and for some reason,
1:04:13
it doesn't show it on the web page. So,
1:04:15
like I have to download the spreadsheet
1:04:16
to check what it is, and it took a
1:04:18
minute. Um, it the fulfillment note is
1:04:21
let them have help from a friendly
1:04:24
spirit.
1:04:26
>> Let them have help from a friendly
1:04:27
spirit. Okay, that's not a hoie stick at
1:04:29
all. And we're going to so we're going
1:04:30
to reccon a little bit. Uh, it is going
1:04:32
to be your turn. Um,
1:04:37
from a friendly spirit. Okay. Well,
1:04:38
let's party. Uh,
1:04:42
okay. Jesse,
1:04:44
>> Jam is Jam rolled better. Jam's going to
1:04:46
go before you.
1:04:48
Son of a [ __ ] Uh Jam uh is looking at
1:04:53
his feet. He's like,
1:04:55
"Mama, I wish you were here." Uh and as
1:04:59
he says that, a wind begins to blow
1:05:02
through the trees. Ash, you get to keep
1:05:05
that hoie stick, by the way, just in
1:05:07
your pocket. Um a wind begins to blow
1:05:10
through the trees. Um, and you all you
1:05:13
you hear words in your head just a I am
1:05:16
baby. Uh, and the
1:05:20
the this thing that is not a deer uh
1:05:24
when the wind hits it, the leaves
1:05:25
blowing past it just huffs and stands up
1:05:28
on its back feet and and kind of backs
1:05:31
up a little bit getting away from you.
1:05:33
you know, it its feet with its spine
1:05:35
spinning in the air and it and it lands
1:05:37
away and it it kind of looks at you uh
1:05:40
just unsure all of a sudden if it wants
1:05:41
to get too close or not.
1:05:45
>> Okay.
1:05:47
>> All right, Jesse, we're not you.
1:05:49
>> Holy stick.
1:05:52
>> Um
1:05:57
stick.
1:05:59
What's funny, I literally had the page
1:06:01
just now and I was like, "Oh, I'll close
1:06:03
this." Okay. Um, all right. So, you hold
1:06:06
it, you spend it. Uh, the wind creates
1:06:08
surrounds and protects you and all
1:06:09
creatures within an immediate range. You
1:06:12
all gain plus three to armor. Um, oh,
1:06:15
Romeo D6.
1:06:18
We got to figure out what level this
1:06:19
hoie stick is.
1:06:20
>> Two.
1:06:22
>> All right. So, it is a level five hoie
1:06:23
stick. Um, so you're gonna get plus
1:06:25
three to armor against damage of a
1:06:27
specified kind for one hour. Um, roll a
1:06:31
D100 to determine the specified type of
1:06:33
damage.
1:06:35
>> I I hate this and I think it's dumb
1:06:38
because it basically has like a one in
1:06:40
10 chance of actually being useful in
1:06:42
this moment.
1:06:43
>> Okay,
1:06:43
>> so go ahead and roll. And if you roll
1:06:45
good, we're going to go with it. And if
1:06:46
not, I'm going to be like, "This is
1:06:47
stupid. We're now rolling on a
1:06:48
>> 30 36."
1:06:50
>> Okay, I This is stupid. So
1:06:52
congratulations. You are protected
1:06:54
against acid damage. That is the worst.
1:06:57
Yeah,
1:06:57
>> great. Terrible.
1:06:58
>> Um, okay. You uh you are actually going
1:07:02
to be protected. You're going to have
1:07:05
that armor effect against slashing and
1:07:08
piercing damage.
1:07:09
>> Cool.
1:07:10
>> Uh because that actually makes sense.
1:07:12
>> Yeah. Yeah.
1:07:12
>> All right. Um Okay. Um All right. And so
1:07:16
that's going to be your action. Um and
1:07:19
the creature is is a reasonable ways
1:07:21
away from you. It's not like up in your
1:07:22
face anymore cuz it kind of backed off
1:07:24
uh when the spirit came. Um all right,
1:07:27
it is now the creature's turn. The
1:07:29
creature is going to approach uh Isaiah
1:07:34
and is going to attack Isaiah. So, one
1:07:36
of the things for Cipher system, GM
1:07:38
never rolls.
1:07:41
>> We roll defense, right?
1:07:43
>> That's right. So, you're going to roll a
1:07:45
might roll Isaiah
1:07:47
>> to protect against this.
1:07:50
>> Okay. Uh, hang on. I'm being reminded to
1:07:54
refresh the uh the donations bar. It
1:07:57
should It's not automatically updating,
1:07:59
which I thought it would. So, I must
1:08:00
have something messed up in OBS.
1:08:05
Interesting. Interesting. Interesting.
1:08:10
See if that changes it. Okay. All right.
1:08:13
So, I'm rolling a might defense roll.
1:08:15
You said that's right.
1:08:16
>> All right. Here we go.
1:08:19
12.
1:08:21
>> Okay. Um, that will uh that'll defend.
1:08:24
And so the creature uh slashes at you
1:08:27
with its elbow, but you're able to kind
1:08:28
of pop out uh ju just in time and not
1:08:31
actually take any damage from the
1:08:32
creature.
1:08:34
Um
1:08:35
all right. Uh Isaiah, we are to you.
1:08:40
Okay. Um All right. So great big not
1:08:45
dear spiky terrifying thing. I've got a
1:08:48
little pocketk knife. Um,
1:08:53
great. Great. Uh, staring in terror at
1:08:57
my um
1:08:59
sheet. So, what does our friend Jam look
1:09:02
like he's going to do?
1:09:04
>> Um, he looks like he might turn and run.
1:09:07
>> Honestly, I'm kind of with him. Uh,
1:09:11
for lack of a better idea, I'm going to
1:09:13
try using my shake the bones ability.
1:09:16
So, I'm going to read you the
1:09:17
description. Your words are so powerful
1:09:20
they cause the bones of a creature to
1:09:22
shudder and shake, inflicting two points
1:09:24
of might damage and two points of
1:09:26
intellect damage. Your target must be
1:09:28
able to hear and understand or at least
1:09:31
understand the gist of what you're
1:09:32
saying. Uh, so I just I just tell it to
1:09:36
shoot. It's like, get E gone. You can't
1:09:40
be here.
1:09:42
>> Okay. And then what do you what do you
1:09:44
roll for that? Um, you know, it doesn't
1:09:46
say it. It's just an action. It seems to
1:09:49
just happen as far as I can tell.
1:09:52
>> Um, but then there's a cost with it.
1:09:54
Like you'll spend something out of a
1:09:55
pool to do.
1:09:56
>> Yeah, it's uh one intellect, but I have
1:09:58
an edge, so it's free for me.
1:10:01
>> Yeah, we're going to take a harder look
1:10:03
at that in a second. Okay.
1:10:04
>> Okay.
1:10:04
>> I don't think that's how that works,
1:10:06
bud.
1:10:06
>> I'll go find the ability and see if
1:10:08
there's a check I'm supposed to be
1:10:09
rolling with it. I think you're supposed
1:10:11
to spend two
1:10:14
uh from your intellect pool in order to
1:10:16
use it. And edge edge reduces the cost
1:10:19
by one.
1:10:20
>> Yeah. Well, shake the bones. One
1:10:21
intellect point.
1:10:24
>> Oh, yeah.
1:10:26
>> And then you have an edge, so you're
1:10:28
thinking it's free.
1:10:29
>> Exactly. Here's our limited
1:10:31
understanding of cipher system. We
1:10:32
really need to play this game more. Um,
1:10:34
I don't like it's an action to use, so
1:10:37
it does consume my turn, but I don't
1:10:39
know if I'm actually supposed to be
1:10:40
rolling a check or something.
1:10:41
>> No, we're we're going to roll uh we're
1:10:43
going to roll with it. I'm going to say
1:10:44
that you are able to successfully do
1:10:46
that, and it is going to take damage
1:10:48
from you having done that. Um, which is
1:10:50
going to infuriate it.
1:10:54
>> Great. Great.
1:10:55
>> Okay. Um, all right. So, G intrusion. I
1:10:57
know that we had one queued up, paid
1:10:59
for. Um, right at this minute, another
1:11:02
creature of a similar ilk is going to
1:11:04
come rushing in from the side. And And
1:11:06
you didn't see it coming, Isaiah.
1:11:09
>> Oh, no. Another one of these.
1:11:11
>> Yeah. Make me a defense roll.
1:11:15
And you uh I'm going to hinder you. So,
1:11:18
you need to roll a 12.
1:11:21
>> All right.
1:11:22
>> Oh, shoot.
1:11:24
>> I totally forgot about my danger sense.
1:11:27
It doesn't matter now.
1:11:28
>> Okay. So you uh you you succeed. Um the
1:11:31
creature comes in and it's trying to
1:11:33
swipe at you with its horns and again
1:11:35
somehow misses. A little clactic. Okay.
1:11:39
Um we're we're back to jam, but but as
1:11:41
we come back to jam, uh you see in the
1:11:43
distance uh a a figure coming towards
1:11:47
you.
1:11:48
>> Okay.
1:11:49
>> Now, this figure uh you can see it has a
1:11:52
bit of fire where a man's head should
1:11:53
be. Uh, and it's almost like the fire is
1:11:55
embedded in the the creature's face and
1:11:58
you can see the the features and the
1:12:00
long jaw and the beard. Um, and it's
1:12:03
it's coming towards you. Uh, and you're
1:12:06
getting, you know, it it's it's running
1:12:08
at this point. You're nervous and you
1:12:09
hear the the growling almost like
1:12:12
there's a the growling of a hound as it
1:12:14
approaches. And all of a sudden, uh, a
1:12:18
fireball bursts into the air, uh, out of
1:12:22
this creature's mouth. And these things
1:12:24
that are not deer see that and they they
1:12:27
run off in the opposite direction. Uh,
1:12:29
and standing before you is a man with a
1:12:32
lamp on his head.
1:12:35
And he says, "Yeah, you know, it's it's
1:12:38
a
1:12:38
>> Oh, like a minor's hat lamp thing."
1:12:41
>> Okay.
1:12:42
>> Uh, and he says, "Oh, yeah. Looks like
1:12:46
Looks like you boys and gals, sorry. Got
1:12:48
in a little bit of trouble.
1:12:50
>> What the hell was that?
1:12:53
>> Oh. Uh, little little trick I do. And he
1:12:55
he picks up a bottle and he pours it in
1:12:57
his mouth and
1:13:00
spits fire.
1:13:03
>> That can't be good for your insides.
1:13:05
>> Yeah.
1:13:06
>> Well, you know, I keep the fire on the
1:13:08
outside. I keep the Applejack on the
1:13:09
inside. And altogether, I'm in good
1:13:11
shape.
1:13:12
Oh, are you um I forget the name. The
1:13:16
guy who does
1:13:17
>> Jim Tand.
1:13:18
>> Yeah.
1:13:18
>> Are you Jim Taland? Jim goes, "You're
1:13:22
damn right that's Jim Talin." Jim, am I
1:13:24
glad to see you tonight. Oh. Oh, how'd
1:13:26
you know to come into town to save my
1:13:27
ass?
1:13:32
That was good timing, Mr. Shotty Place.
1:13:38
Um,
1:13:40
man, am I glad to see you. Let's uh Hey,
1:13:43
I'm I'm walking them uh them up to the
1:13:45
old uh the Smith's house.
1:13:48
>> Someone want to explain to me what the
1:13:50
hell just happened?
1:13:51
>> What do you want to do it just right
1:13:53
here standing the road or you want to
1:13:54
get inside a house?
1:13:55
>> No, sir. Inside house, please.
1:13:57
>> Fine. Inside any structure.
1:13:59
>> All right. Um the the man's dog runs up
1:14:02
next to you and it is one of the cutest
1:14:04
dogs you've ever seen. Well, hey buddy.
1:14:07
>> Yeah, it's it's it's kind of white and
1:14:09
black with like kind of muddled fur, a
1:14:10
little bit of dots here and there, and
1:14:11
it's like, you know, this here's my dog,
1:14:13
Cloot.
1:14:14
>> You scared you scared those messed up
1:14:17
deer, didn't you, boy?
1:14:18
>> You can't. You're a big scary boy,
1:14:20
aren't you?
1:14:21
>> All right. Um, and you're able to you
1:14:23
make it over. You walk in the house. Um,
1:14:25
it's a it's it's a nice enough house.
1:14:27
So, it's the way it's structured. Think
1:14:29
of it almost like a studio. like there's
1:14:30
no individual rooms, but there is uh two
1:14:34
lofts
1:14:35
and so you can climb one ladder, climb
1:14:37
the other ladder, and there's a little
1:14:38
bit of seclusion, a little bit of
1:14:39
privacy. You can look up and see where
1:14:40
the beds are there. Um you've got a
1:14:43
woodf fire stove and you noticed when
1:14:45
you were coming in there was a lot of uh
1:14:47
wood laid out um you know, dry
1:14:50
underneath the porch and so you could
1:14:51
load that up and there's a nice cook top
1:14:53
on top of that stove. Um, you know, a
1:14:56
sitting area, some some nice enough
1:14:57
wooden wooden chairs and a table.
1:15:01
Mostly everything you'd need.
1:15:03
>> Yeah. All right.
1:15:04
>> And you're able to you get inside with
1:15:08
uh Jim and Jam as they were.
1:15:11
>> Jim and Jam.
1:15:13
>> Yeah. Jim and Jam. Uh
1:15:17
yeah. And uh you know Jim uh it's like
1:15:20
you you you folks like Applejack. You
1:15:23
ever had Applejack?
1:15:24
>> Uh, sure. I would I would love some
1:15:26
Applejack.
1:15:27
>> You kidding me? Applejack is my
1:15:29
favorite.
1:15:30
>> All right. Um, he starts passing around
1:15:32
the bottle and he's like, "Yeah,
1:15:35
I got some of my own supply if you want
1:15:37
some of that."
1:15:39
>> I I sure would. What? Uh, what was
1:15:42
grain?
1:15:43
>> Uh, I believe it was um
1:15:47
I I can't remember. I think it's corn.
1:15:50
Okay. I I brewed this some years ago
1:15:52
back with my uncle Joey. She takes out a
1:15:55
bottle with just XXX on it.
1:15:58
>> A gallon jug.
1:16:00
>> Passes it around. She's just a little
1:16:02
bit. I'm trying to save it for a special
1:16:04
occasion.
1:16:05
>> Yeah, there you go.
1:16:09
>> Well, that's pretty good. Uh, you know,
1:16:12
this stuff burns more on the inside than
1:16:13
the outside.
1:16:14
>> Yeah.
1:16:15
>> Miss Jesse, how did you fit a gallon jug
1:16:17
in your pockets?
1:16:19
I' I've had it on the side of my my You
1:16:22
didn't see that on the side of my belt
1:16:24
this whole time.
1:16:26
>> Ma'am, I'll be honest. I was trying to I
1:16:29
was trying to maintain eye contact
1:16:30
politely and
1:16:32
>> B just seeing my window.
1:16:34
>> Excuse me.
1:16:36
>> Actually, no. She she she has she has
1:16:39
like a a travel sack on on her back that
1:16:42
she keeps the jug in.
1:16:44
>> That's actually a that's actually a
1:16:46
thing that she has. Um,
1:16:48
>> it's it's called a travel pack. So,
1:16:50
>> perfect.
1:16:51
>> Mhm.
1:16:52
>> Okay. Yeah, I know. Some uh you know, we
1:16:55
got some strange things out here in the
1:16:57
mountains down in the holler. Uh,
1:17:00
suppose suppose you two are new in town.
1:17:02
Never seen your faces.
1:17:03
>> Yeah, you could say that. More like new
1:17:05
prisoners in town.
1:17:08
>> Ah, I see.
1:17:12
Uh, Mr. Tin
1:17:15
Jesse and I have found our way here
1:17:18
mostly against our will. Uh but it seems
1:17:21
like we're going to be here for some
1:17:24
time. And uh yeah, we we sure would like
1:17:28
it to be a comfortable time while we're
1:17:31
here.
1:17:31
>> Speak for yourself.
1:17:34
I sure would like it to be a comfortable
1:17:36
time while I'm here before uh maybe I
1:17:40
make my way on to somewhere not here. Um
1:17:45
clearly there are some things that we
1:17:46
need to know about the goings on in this
1:17:49
town.
1:17:49
>> I get why a lot of people don't come
1:17:51
here willingly.
1:17:53
>> Yeah.
1:17:55
>> No, I mean people born and raised here
1:17:58
just I don't know. Everywhere has got
1:18:00
>> Yeah. You get that's fine. Yeah. No.
1:18:02
Being born here, I get it. Do you get a
1:18:04
lot of willing immigrants here?
1:18:09
>> No.
1:18:09
>> Yeah, that's what I thought.
1:18:13
Yeah. What was that?
1:18:18
>> Um
1:18:21
just some some of the deer grow real
1:18:24
strange. I I think it's the shadow of
1:18:25
the mountain, you know.
1:18:29
>> Yeah, there's no sir. There's only a few
1:18:33
things that get on my nerves and that uh
1:18:37
one of them is people not showing the
1:18:40
proper respect. The second is people
1:18:43
taking me for a ride and not telling me
1:18:46
the whole truth because they think I
1:18:48
can't handle it for some reason. So, cut
1:18:50
with the [ __ ] and tell me what the
1:18:52
hell's going on.
1:18:54
All right. Well, why don't we have a
1:18:57
longer conversation of that when we come
1:19:00
back from the break in just a second.
1:19:04
>> For folks joining us in the live stream,
1:19:06
uh, we're going to take a break for just
1:19:07
a moment.
1:19:08
>> Is your energy already flagging, Tyler?
1:19:10
You're in for a rough ride. Oh.
1:19:13
>> Oh, okay.
1:19:14
>> No, I'm doing great. Like,
1:19:16
>> okay. You're like, I can't believe we
1:19:17
got that far.
1:19:19
>> No, I mean, we were already attacked by
1:19:21
two Eldrich abominations.
1:19:23
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No, I'm having a great
1:19:24
time.
1:19:26
>> I I hope people are enjoying Jesse and
1:19:29
that she's not garbage.
1:19:33
>> Yeah. Honestly, what Okay. Wasn't the
1:19:35
name of the the cowgirl from Toy Story
1:19:38
Jesse?
1:19:38
>> It was.
1:19:39
>> I think it was. Yeah.
1:19:40
>> Yeah. Okay. That's in my mind. That's
1:19:42
the mental model that I'm kind of
1:19:43
running with.
1:19:44
>> That's fair. Yeah. Yeah. You painted a
1:19:46
picture and I'm just I'm adding
1:19:47
>> I was originally going to call her Jesse
1:19:49
Waters, but then I saw, oh, that's an
1:19:51
actual political commentator, so I
1:19:53
shouldn't do that.
1:19:56
>> Okay.
1:19:56
>> Yeah. No, I just the name came to me. I
1:19:58
was like, Jesse Waters sounds cool. And
1:20:00
I was like, is that a real name? I
1:20:02
should look this up before I use it. I
1:20:03
was like, oh no.
1:20:06
>> Almost signaled the wrong thing. Okay.
1:20:08
Yeah. Um, so folks joining us live
1:20:10
stream. We're gonna take a break for
1:20:11
