Passive perception in #dnd works on traps just like rolling Perception would. Passive Investigation is only a thing according to the DnDBeyond character sheet and I have no idea why they added it. #dnd5e #2024dnd #ttrpg #dungeonsanddragons

passive perception and traps that's a
0:03
fun one uh so this commenter they they
0:05
meant investigation not interrogation
0:08
autocomplete what can you do the 5e
0:11
rules have done a really bad job
0:13
explaining the difference between
0:15
perception and
0:17
investigation but the 2024 Dungeon
0:19
Masters Guide on page 35 does actually
0:23
have a pretty good explanation and it
0:25
only took them 10 years to actually
0:27
explain the difference so perception is
0:30
for finding and noticing things that are
0:33
hidden hidden doors hidden creatures
0:35
traps etc investigation is for
0:39
understanding things understanding how
0:41
they work understanding what they are so
0:43
use investigation with the study action
0:47
while you use perception with the search
0:49
action and that should kind of give you
0:52
an idea of what they're intended to do
0:54
now how does perception work with traps
0:59
specifically basically if a tra like a
1:02
trap will have essentially a perception
1:04
DC to find it if your characters have a
1:08
per a passive perception that is higher
1:11
than the perception DC for the trap they
1:14
notice the trap that's it
1:17
uh if their passive perception is lower
1:20
than the perception DC for the trap
1:22
they'll need to get an impression that
1:25
there's a trap somewhere or just guess
1:28
essentially and then they can make an
1:29
active perception check and hope that
1:31
they roll above a 10 and then maybe they
1:34
find the trap now this does create a
1:36
really frustrating situation where
1:38
characters who are sufficiently
1:39
observant maybe they they have expertise
1:42
maybe they just have really good wisdom
1:43
I don't know but those characters can be
1:46
so good at perception that it is
1:49
effectively impossible to surprise them
1:51
with traps and for that reason those
1:54
classic dungeon crawls Tomb of Horrors
1:56
etc That style of gaming essentially no
1:59
longer exists in 5e because it is simply
2:02
too easy to find traps now a lot of
2:07
people are perfectly fine with that um
2:10
like those old school dungeons they have
2:13
a place they were a lot of fun i love
2:16
that style of gameplay personally but
2:19
there are a lot of players who really
2:20
just don't like they they feel like
2:22
being stabbed by a needle in a doornob
2:24
or whatever is a cheap trick so they're
2:27
perfectly fine with those things being
2:28
handled by passive perception if you do
2:32
want that kind of old school dungeon
2:34
crawl feel where traps still feel
2:36
surprising and dangerous consider just
2:39
doing away with passive perception
2:41
entirely
