How would I multiclass shadow monk and rogue in DnD? There’s some redundancy, but there are also a few cool things like unarmored defense, expertise, and weapon mastery to consider.

more D and D multiclassing. All right,
0:01
this time we're looking at the rogue and
0:03
the warrior of shadow monk. So, there's
0:06
some similarities and some differences
0:09
between the 2014 rules and the 2024
0:11
rules here. In the 2014 rules, the way
0:14
of shadow monk could cast darkness, but
0:16
they couldn't see through their own
0:18
darkness, which created kind of a huge
0:20
problem. You could move in and out of
0:22
the darkness, which was very convenient,
0:24
but at the same time, you couldn't
0:25
attack within it. So, you had to use it
0:28
as kind of a a place to retreat to
0:30
during combat or as an area control
0:32
thing. In the 2024 rules, warrior of
0:35
shadow can see through their own
0:37
darkness, which is really really
0:38
powerful. That makes it especially
0:40
appealing for the rogue. At the same
0:42
time, monks looking at rogue are looking
0:44
at cunning action, sneak attack, weapon
0:47
proficiencies, things like that. Um, the
0:49
weapon proficiencies aren't going to be
0:51
as useful as you might hope because most
0:53
of those don't qualify as monk weapons.
0:55
So, you're not going to get all the
0:56
benefits of using those weapons as a
0:58
monk. In the 2024 rules, the updates to
1:02
martial arts and the focus system. Um,
1:05
those made cunning action much less
1:07
appealing for the monk because now a lot
1:08
of those things are free for the monk
1:11
instead of costing key points like they
1:13
did in 2014. So, if we look at how we
1:15
multiclass the two, you're going to want
1:17
to figure out which one is the dip,
1:18
which one is your primary class. Um,
1:21
monk is a class that really, really
1:23
needs you to focus on the class so you
1:26
can advance your pool of focus points.
1:28
Similarly, rogue needs you to focus on
1:30
rogue so that you can continue advancing
1:31
your sneak attack. Monks can use weapons
1:34
that will qualify for sneak attack.
1:36
Dagger is probably your best bet, but
1:38
fortunately, you have the martial arts
1:39
die to increase the damage there. Um, so
1:42
monks can deal sneak attack, but not
1:45
with their unarmed strike. So those
1:46
bonus action attacks become much less
1:48
appealing for the rogue than they are
1:50
for the monk. Conversely, like the the
1:53
monk isn't going to get a ton of value
1:55
out of just one or two sneak attack
1:56
dice. So if you're a monk dipping into
1:58
rogue, you're going in for expertise
2:00
most likely and maybe for subclass
2:02
features if you go far enough. If you're
2:04
rogue looking at monk, you're you're
2:06
probably going for warrior of shadow so
2:08
you can get the ability to cast darkness
2:10
and then see through it. Personally, if
2:12
I'm if I'm picking which one to focus
2:14
on, I would go for rogue, three levels
2:16
in Warrior of Shadow. That will let you
2:18
cast darkness three times per short
2:20
rest, which is more than enough in the
2:23
vast majority of campaigns. And then you
2:25
have perpetual advantage on attacks to
2:27
hit and disadvantage on attacks against
2:29
you. You don't need to hide because you
2:31
already have advantage on all of your
2:33
attacks. And you can use cunning action
2:36
or the martial arts thing, I'm
2:38
forgetting the name right now, step of
2:39
the wind. There we go. Uh, you can use
2:41
either one and still be incredibly fast.
2:45
Enemies can't move fast enough to get
2:47
away from you. Since you already have
2:48
advantage, you don't need to use a Vex
2:50
weapon like a rapier or a shortsord as
2:52
your primary weapon.
