DnD’s Rune Carver background and the Rune Shaper feat work great in the 2024 rules! Magic Initiate is more powerful, but don’t let that stop you.

D and D's rune carver background and a
0:02
few others from the 2014 rules can be
0:04
perfectly adapted to the 2024 rules. And
0:07
the way they were designed actually
0:09
makes sense as a precursor to how
0:10
backgrounds work in the 2024 D and D
0:13
rules. Starting in Dragon Lance, we
0:15
started getting backgrounds that came
0:17
with a feat at level one. So, this was
0:19
like the precursor to what we now know
0:22
as origin feats. you would get a
0:24
background. The background would come
0:25
with a feat. And sometimes those feats
0:28
would have follow-up feats that you
0:30
could get at level four, such as Strike
0:32
of the Giants and the Squire of Salomnia
0:35
feat having three other options, and
0:37
then like the colored rope wizards. I'm
0:39
forgetting the names right now. This
0:41
user specifically points to the rune
0:43
carver background out of Glory of the
0:45
Giants, which gives you the rune shaper
0:47
feat. Rune Shaper lets you learn several
0:51
level one spells regardless of your
0:53
spell list from like a specific list in
0:55
the feat. Basically, you uh you
0:57
accumulate runes as your proficiency
0:59
bonus increases. And then each rune lets
1:01
you pick another spell from the list.
1:03
And there's some really great options on
1:04
there. Chromatic orb, command,
1:06
sanctuary, armor, agthus, and like those
1:09
are just my personal favorites. The ones
1:11
I rate blue on the website. Um, so those
1:14
are really great to throw on basically
1:16
any full caster. If you're building a
1:19
full caster, Armor of Agthus is a really
1:21
fantastic defensive option, like a
1:23
bladinger, for example. Yes, you have a
1:25
ton of AC and you're really good at
1:27
concentration, but you still have no hit
1:29
points. So, Armor of Agthus is a huge
1:32
pad, and if you do get hit, you get
1:34
retaliatory damage, which is amazing.
1:36
Always awesome. Command is just a great
1:38
crowd control spell. And like all of
1:40
those spells that I listed work really
1:43
well with upcasting. You do get to cast
1:45
them once per day without a spell slot,
1:47
but the real benefit is the ability to
1:49
cast them with your own spell slots. And
1:51
being able to upcast those powerful
1:53
low-level spells from other spell lists
1:55
offers a ton of options to other
1:57
classes. Chromatic Orb is great on a
2:00
bard. Command is great on a wizard.
2:02
Armor of Agthus is great on anyone
2:04
planning to be in melee like marshall
2:07
bards. Absolutely. Yes, take this. So
2:10
yeah, the rune carver background and
2:12
then give it the rune shaper feat as an
2:15
origin feat. Bring that into the 2024
2:17
rules. Absolutely perfect. Very cool.
2:20
Very fun. I would 100% allow this in my
