New Handbook for the 2024 Warlock
September 11, 2024
I wanted to comment on a potential oversight I noticed in the Warlock Pact of the Blade weapons. You recommended that such a player use Heavy weapons such as the Greatsword or Glaive due to their higher damage, and since Warlocks don’t get Shield proficiency, you don’t need a second hand anyway. But those weapons have the Heavy property, which for melee weapons in the 2024 rules means that they require 13+ Strength for melee weapons or you have disadvantage on the attack. While Pact of the Blade allows you to use Charisma instead of Strength or Dexterity for attacking, I don’t believe it says that Charisma replaces Strength in the Heavy property.
So, could a Warlock even use heavy melee weapons? Wouldn’t they have disadvantage on every attack? It might make sense to build for 13 Strength to boost your damage, but that’s expensive when you also need Dexterity and Constitution for defenses, and certainly wouldn’t be done by all Charisma-based Pact of the Blade Warlocks.
You’re absoltuely right; Pact of the Blade doesn’t negate the Heavy requirements, which makes using a Heavy melee weapon difficult to justify.
Thanks for spotting that. I’m making updates now.
